Engineering Apprenticeship Level 2

This Level 2 apprenticeship is ideal if you want to become a qualified engineer. The apprenticeship route provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of occupations within the engineering field. You must have good practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically. FdSc Conservation and Ecology

Level 5 • Full-time • Wildlife Conservation & Zoology department


Are you interested in wildlife and nature conservation? This is an inspirational, field-based practical course situated on the Cornwall College Newquay campus, adjacent to Newquay Zoo. On this programme you will learn about ecology (how organisms interact with each other and with their physical environment) and how we conserve species and habitats. This requires knowledge about how to observe, survey, monitor and manage species and where they live. You will develop skills in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and other relevant field and research skills. Teaching will be through traditional lectures, fieldwork, labwork and workshops. All our lecturers are experts in their particular field with wide-ranging qualifications, interests and experience. Some topics will be delivered by experts from organisations such as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the National Trust. Guest speakers play an important role in your learning and they are used regularly to provide more expert knowledge in some of the specialised modules. Work-related learning is a valuable part of the programme and you will undertake work experience locally or overseas. In this way, you will gain experience and develop graduate-level skills in the type of work that you hope to do, and learn about the expectations of those who may employ you. The contacts you make during your work experience may well be your link to future employment. During the programme, you will have plenty of opportunity to visit the broad range of habitats and environments in Cornwall. We also run optional residential field trips or research projects to destinations further afield, including Borneo, Honduras, South Africa and the Scilly Isles. At the end of the programme you will be equipped with the academic qualifications, personal qualities, vocational skills and techniques essential for a career in the ecological or environmental sector.

Electrical Installation Diploma

Level 1 • Full-time • Construction department


This qualification will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills needed for electrical installation. It is suitable for those with little to no prior knowledge of this subject and is a great starting point if you are looking to go on to a level 2 qualification. On completion of this level 1 course, you can progress onto the full-time Level 2 Diploma.To qualify as an electrician studying full-time you will need to complete both the Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas, each taking a year to study. You will then need to complete the final two years of an apprenticeship at Level 3 to become fully qualified

Hairdressing Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3

Level 3 • Work-based • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy department


As a hairdresser your job is to make people look amazing! From cutting and colouring to styling and consulting with your clients, as an apprentice you will be learning how to do all of these things while at the same time building up a rapport with clients and showing off your lively personality. The great thing about being an apprentice is that you will also be earning money at the same time! Our courses will put you on the road to a great future; we have developed our qualifications in partnership with industry professionals to ensure the knowledge you gain is not only relevant and current, but will set you apart in the workplace. Throughout your studies you will learn by completing practical activities and assessments based on professional real-life scenarios in our Koko commercial training salons. You’ll get the chance to take part in competitions, fashion shows and get some masterclass insights from visiting professionals. As part of this apprenticeship you will develop your skills in purpose-built salons which are open to the public. You will attend lectures in college one day per week while the remainder of the week is spent in the workplace. You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent in the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

Pathfinder

Entry Level • Full-time • Foundation Learning department


This department focuses on building your confidence in learning, employability and independent living with all programmes tailored to each individual learner, with effective teaching that involves providing each student with different avenues to learning, often in the same classroom. We have dedicated foundation learning areas and experienced tutors who will help you reach your full potential. This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. In order to make the most of the course you must be keen to try a variety of vocational options, including animal care, horticulture, art, catering, sport, childcare and ICT, all designed to help you decide what you might like to do as a job. You may study on this course for 1-4 years depending on your level of entry. These courses are ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. In order to make the most of the course you must be keen to try a variety of vocational options, including animal care, horticulture, art, catering, sport, childcare and ICT, all designed to help you decide what you might like to do as a job. You will learn new skills, build your teamwork skills, your independence and your confidence, as well as improve your English and maths. These courses run for 3-4 days per week depending on the level of study and are aimed towards 16-24 year olds with additional needs.

Electrical Installation Diploma

Level 2 • Full-time • Construction department


This one-year Level 2 programme will introduce you to the electro-technical environment. You’ll learn how to work safely and efficiently, identifying sources of technical information and start to build an understanding of the different types of electrical machinery and operations, scientific concepts, circuitry and fault protection. There are many different ways to work as an electrician, from being a self-employed general technician working on domestic repairs or new home builds, to big engineering projects or lighting stadiums and festivals. You could specialise in installation, maintenance, construction of systems, repair or even work supporting highways systems. To qualify as an electrician studying full-time you will need to complete both the Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas, each taking a year to study. You will then need to complete the final two years of an apprenticeship at Level 3 to become fully qualified. We are the only training centre offering free qualifications for school leavers to train full-time in Cornwall.

Beauty Therapy

Level 3 • Full-time • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy department


If you are already qualified to a level 2 standard and are looking to improve upon your qualification, either as a full time or part time student, this course will help you to progress in your career in beauty therapy. You may also be looking to demonstrate that you have the skills necessary to offer treatments at a more advanced level. Not only will you develop existing skills but you will also train in the more specialist areas such as electrotherapy and microdermabrasion. If you don’t currently have the skills or experience required to undertake this Level 3 course we also offer Beauty Therapy Level 2, which upon completion will allow you to progress to Level 3. You can expect to train in one of our industry standard salons, work in a realistic environment and use the latest equipment, machinery and products. When you are confident enough and have practiced the techniques to a level 3 standard, you will be able to provide treatments to paying customers.
