For the last three years, I have been working at Pivotal across engineering and product management on the Cloud Foundry open source project, which is having a significant impact on enterprises wanting to transform how they deliver software to their customers. Recently I have taken on a new role in Pivotal's Labs division, working with our customers to help them re-platform and modernise their applications on Pivotal Cloud Foundry. My role requires me to understand a range of computing abstractions, from the hardware to the containerisation technology; the fundamentals I learned at Cornwall College are still valuable today.
After completing the IT diploma with the College Ben decided he wasn’t quite ready for university and took a job working for a national company dealing with television services. After five years Ben felt the time was right for the next step and applied for the BSc (Hons) Computing course at the University of Plymouth. Fast forward four years and he is now part of a graduate scheme at Boeing working as a software developer.
“I wasn’t sure what career I wanted, but I remember being told to follow my passion, so that’s exactly what I did. IT is such a vast area of study that you’ll never become an expert in everything, but my college course was a great introduction to all IT disciplines. I’m now working at Boeing, primarily as a software developer. I still can’t quite believe it. My graduate scheme at Boeing offers rotations between four different departments. Currently I’m working within Application Support, helping to introduce some of the new technologies I’ve learned over the last few years.”
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Cornwall College. The course was clearly laid out and the lecturers were very helpful. The assignments were engaging, and questions answered clearly by the lecturers.
After completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT, I am now working as a Level 4 Software Developer Apprentice for IBM. In my role I look after test environments and monitor our test infrastructure. I enjoy the constant new challenge and learning opportunities as you get to see all the different ways that software interacts with its operating environment. "
