If you are wondering what to do after GCSEs we can help. Our courses are developed to help you reach your full potential. To do this we combine your qualification with work experience and personal skills and development to make you stand out from the crowd. We want to make sure that you are well prepared for the workplace or higher education no matter what you decide to do with your future.

Here at The Career College we like to begin with the end in mind and train people for specific careers, with hands-on practical training you can take straight into the workplace. This starts with two options; full-time education or an apprenticeship.

Full-time education at Cornwall College begins with choosing a specialist qualification designed with your chosen career in mind. We have over 80 subjects to choose from Aircraft Engineering to Zoology and everything in-between.

If you are fortunate enough to know the career route you want to follow, why wait? With an apprenticeship you can earn a real salary and learn in the workplace while you gain experience and qualifications. Throughout your apprenticeship you will have the support of your college tutor to ensure your learning is on track and an apprenticeship advisor who will visit you at work to make sure you are happy and thriving in the workplace.

Diploma in Sport

Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne

If you love sport and fitness, this is the course for you! You will develop your skills and knowledge in the sports health and fitness sector. This is your first step to becoming a sports coach, PE teacher or fitness instructor! The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our on-campus sports hall, a fully equipped gym and 3G pitch. You’ll be looking at everything: strength & conditioning techniques, sporting skills and the beginnings of tactical awareness, along with teamwork and leadership. In addition, you will be carrying out your very own personal fitness plan as you progress through the course. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to start your journey towards a career in sport, health and fitness. Cornwall College has a selection of college sports teams, which regularly train and compete at a participatory and competitive level. A large selection of enrichment activities are also available, including table tennis, badminton, recreational football, basketball and circuit training. We have excellent links with local employers and sports clubs, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield or abroad. As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to everything from the theory behind how the body works, to the practical steps needed to plan and coach your very own sport/fitness session. Our highly-skilled and motivated staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience in sport, health and fitness. They are there to give you the very best start to your career.

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell

If you want to make a positive difference to someone’s life by contributing to their health, happiness and wellbeing then a career in Health and Social Care is the choice for you. This Level 3 Health and Social Care course is an exciting new way to develop the skills and competencies needed for a career in the Health and Social Care field. The course provides in-depth study and training for anyone interested in a career in the Health services or Social Care field and 2 days per week in a range of health and social care settings, with Cornwall Care. It also provides the theory and experience, which will be invaluable for progression into higher education, such as a nursing degree or into employment in the health sector as a practitioner in a variety of settings. You will also have opportunities to develop effective communication techniques as well as a range of practical skills, which are vital to work and progress in this field. There are specialist units that enhance the generic health and social care core subjects, such as mental health issues, psychology and health promotion. Completion of the Care Certificate will form part of this study programme. You will study 3 days per week at the new Cornwall Care training academy at Cornwall College’s St Austell campus and 2 days per week in a range of health and social care settings, with Cornwall Care. You will gain UCAS tariff points that will allow you to progress to university to study degrees such as midwifery, social work, teaching, care management, nursing or other care related subjects.

Media Make-up Artistry Advanced Technical Diploma Level 3

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Media Make-up Artistry provides you with specialist practical skills and knowledge, equipping you to seek employment or progression within the media make-up industry. It has been specifically designed to develop skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques. This course is aimed at those who already have experience within the make-up industry or have a Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Make-up Artistry.

Electrical Installation Diploma

The course is specifically designed for those who have completed the Level 2 Intermediate Diploma in Electrical and builds on the skills and knowledge attained. The qualification may also be suitable for other learners, including adults, who are interested in electrical installation and/or are considering a career change. Using up-to-date knowledge and skills, the electrical industry is fast-paced and challenging. The opportunities are boundless, as new technologies and innovations are driving the economic growth in the 21st century. As a fully qualified electrician you could find yourself almost anywhere in the world as the demand for energy efficient power continues to rise. The course entails both theory and practical sessions and caters for all learning styles.   Work experience and industry placements

If you are between 16 and 18 years old it is a requirement that you undertake a Work Experience Placement whilst you are on your course. This involves working at a local business which is in the same industry as your course, i.e. if you are taking a hair dressing qualification you may work at a local hair salon. The minimum amount of time you would spend on work experience is one week but this will change depending on your course.

If you are on a level 3 course your work experience may take the form of an Industry Placement. An Industry Placement is a minimum of 315 hours (approx. 45 days) and involves actively contributing to the workplace whilst working on targets which you have set yourself. These targets may be hard skills i.e. knowledge and skills related to the industry, as well as soft skills i.e. behaviours, values and employability.

The Industry Placement and Work Experience Placement that you undertake will depend on your course and circumstances. This will be discussed in more detail at your interview. See the current vacancies we have to give you an idea of what is possible.
