If you are wondering what to do after GCSEs we can help. Our courses are developed to help you reach your full potential. To do this we combine your qualification with work experience and personal skills and development to make you stand out from the crowd. We want to make sure that you are well prepared for the workplace or higher education no matter what you decide to do with your future.

Here at The Career College we like to begin with the end in mind and train people for specific careers, with hands-on practical training you can take straight into the workplace. This starts with two options; full-time education or an apprenticeship.

Full-time education at Cornwall College begins with choosing a specialist qualification designed with your chosen career in mind. We have over 80 subjects to choose from Aircraft Engineering to Zoology and everything in-between.

If you are fortunate enough to know the career route you want to follow, why wait? With an apprenticeship you can earn a real salary and learn in the workplace while you gain experience and qualifications. Throughout your apprenticeship you will have the support of your college tutor to ensure your learning is on track and an apprenticeship advisor who will visit you at work to make sure you are happy and thriving in the workplace.

Beauty Therapy

Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


This course is an ideal start if you are thinking about pursuing a career in the beauty therapy industry. You’ll develop a foundation of Beauty Therapy skills in areas such as face and skin analysis, hair removal treatments, manicure, pedicure and make-up, light cured gel polish as well as the principles of practice for Beauty Therapists. You will also gain the basic knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists.

Vehicle Service Technician Diploma

Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


This course is a perfect progression from the Level 1 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance Technician and develops existing knowledge by examining the components of vehicle servicing in more detail, preparing you with an advanced skillset necessary for success in a fast-moving and dynamic industry. The Vehicle Service Technician Diploma Level 2 involves both practical workshop activity and theory sessions, making it the perfect course for you if you enjoy hands-on work and getting stuck in, and would like to develop an advanced knowledge of the automotive industry. You will: Study health and safety, tools and materials, automotive job roles, batteries, wheels, tyres, brakes, exhaust systems and associated systems Use the latest equipment and vehicles in a realistic, industry standard environment Develop soft skills, such as communication and employer expectations, to prepare you for the industry Have opportunities for work experience alongside your studies Gain the practical skills needed to complete your GCSE English and Maths Gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. Aircraft Maintenance Diploma

Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne


Why not consider a career in aviation? Develop your skills and acquire valuable experience in a fast-paced, challenging engineering sector. Combining study with practical learning, our aeronautical courses offer an exciting foundation for a career in aeronautical engineering. This course will teach you the basics of aviation engineering, you will study subjects such as the fundamentals of aviation science, airframe construction, electronic principles and the theory of flight amongst many others. You’ll be developing essential hand fitting skills at our fully equipped fabrication workshop and through our partnership with Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre carrying out aircraft maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course. You’ll be learning from experienced professionals who are there to give you the very best start to your career. Whether you are interested in flying or engineering, either in the civil industry or the military then Cornwall College can set you on the path. What our students say: “This year so far at Cornwall College has been more intriguing than the last. We now have our own ejection seat to work on and we are able to put our theory learning into some practical work which gives us all a clearer insight into the aircraft industry and what it would be like to work on a genuine aircraft. Our class and the Serco apprentices had a trip out to Newquay airport, where we were able to see aircraft in person and have a better understanding of the aircraft world, if we had any questions all we had to do was ask and David or Paul would be to help us understand and clearly see how all parts are used inside and outside the aircraft.” – George Besford Level 2 Aircraft Maintenance What our tutors say (blog extract): ‘The last few weeks has seen some exciting additions to the practical side of our Aeronautical Engineering programme. Firstly, we took delivery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 ejection seat which saw service in a Canberra T22 aircraft. This seat is deactivated but is 95% complete and will see a full restoration courtesy of our Level 3 Aero students. This will help them gain experience with stripping, servicing and reassembling aircraft related mechanical components. The seat’s new home is our new Aero practical area that sits within the main Brunel workshops. This area contains many aircraft components that our students have already put to use this week by practicing their wire locking skills. Secondly, we have moved our Rolls Royce Viper turbo jet engine from its temporary home at Newquay Airport and it is now on display in the Brunel foyer. This engine was fitted to our Jet Provost aircraft which remains at Newquay. The students have already enjoyed looking over the engine and in time, they will be starting to strip and recondition various components from it. The engine will also help greatly in the teaching of jet propulsion theory. Finally, the Level 3 full-time and apprentice students spent a day at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre at Newquay, touring the Centre and carrying out control cable maintenance tasks that are required for their PEOs. These tasks were carried out on the Centre’s Percival Pembroke aircraft. We hope to carry out more visits in the new year and strengthen the close relationship we already have formed with the Centre.’ – Paul Case

Classic Vehicle Restoration Principles

Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne


Vehicle restoration is a very specialist area, where demand for skilled technicians is high and salaries can be very rewarding. The skills are transferable to other sectors, so you could take your qualification and move into the boat painting industry, where you could work around the world. To become a qualified technician you must complete the Level 1 and 2 qualifications. At Level 2 specialise in vehicle restoration body, paint and accident repair. We offer full Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET) training to provide you with the best start in the workplace. If you love restoring classic vehicles this course is ideal for you. This qualification contains a broad spectrum of units to allow you the flexibility to develop your knowledge and skills across a wide range of different disciplines including accident repair techniques. This qualification has been developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) in conjunction with the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Club, employers, training providers and IMI Sector Skills Councils.

  Work experience and industry placements

If you are between 16 and 18 years old it is a requirement that you undertake a Work Experience Placement whilst you are on your course. This involves working at a local business which is in the same industry as your course, i.e. if you are taking a hair dressing qualification you may work at a local hair salon. The minimum amount of time you would spend on work experience is one week but this will change depending on your course.

If you are on a level 3 course your work experience may take the form of an Industry Placement. An Industry Placement is a minimum of 315 hours (approx. 45 days) and involves actively contributing to the workplace whilst working on targets which you have set yourself. These targets may be hard skills i.e. knowledge and skills related to the industry, as well as soft skills i.e. behaviours, values and employability.

The Industry Placement and Work Experience Placement that you undertake will depend on your course and circumstances. This will be discussed in more detail at your interview. See the current vacancies we have to give you an idea of what is possible.
