Construction skills (Carpentry)

If you are interested in working in the construction industry, specifically learning a wood trade we offer a choice of specialist training, in bench joinery and site carpentry. Site carpentry focuses on woodwork essential to a construction site, and includes fitting ­flooring, roofing frame installation, partition wall construction and stair building. Bench joinery is predominantly more workshop based, where you make and prepare materials for installation on a construction site. This Level 1 course is an ideal introduction to working with wood in the construction industry if you have no prior knowledge or understanding of the trade. We offer specialist training and qualifications in both bench joinery and site carpentry. There is opportunity to cross over between the two disciplines if you start down one path but then decide it is not right for you. Please note: As part of your course you may be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

Bench Joinery Diploma

If you are aged 19 or over and interested in working in the construction industry, specifically learning a wood trade we offer a choice of specialist training, in bench joinery and site carpentry. This one year, part time course will allow you to build your confidence on practical assignments in our industry simulated scenarios as you learn how to make doors, windows or installation work on construction sites depending on which pathway you choose to take. Bench joinery is predominantly more workshop based, where you make and prepare materials for installation on a construction site. We offer specialist training and qualifications in both bench joinery and site carpentry. There is opportunity to cross over between the two disciplines if you start down one path but then decide it is not right for you. Bricklaying Diploma

Level 2 • Full-time • Construction department


This one year Level 2 course will give you an excellent introduction to working in construction, with a particular focus on bricklaying and the tools and materials used. Bricklayers are responsible for setting out buildings using blocks, bricks and mortar in accordance with approved construction plans. Bricklayers also build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative work such as archways. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. To work on a construction site you need to have a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) card, which covers essential health and safety, however if you wish to earn more than a labourer, gaining a technical skills qualification will provide you with a great start to a career. You can train full-time with us for up to three years with the option to move in to an apprenticeship at any time. We also offer a Level 1 qualification to get you started if you do not meet these entry requirements.

This Level 2 apprenticeship continues your professional development in painting and decorating. Introducing more advanced and complex techniques such as creating specialist finishes and applying and creating colour. You must complete both Level 1 and 2 qualifications to ensure your skills and technical ability are of a high enough standard to start a career in painting and decorating. To work in a construction or building site on new builds you will also need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) accreditation that we can provide as part of the course. This apprenticeship takes two years to complete, working while you earn and learn, by attending college one day per week. You will need to find a business that will employ you as an apprentice throughout your training.

Furniture design is a specialised field where function and fashion collide. Furniture has evolved and changed with the times, some styles have remained constant throughout the years, while others have drastically changed or become obsolete. We offer two ways to train in furniture design and making, either full-time at college or part-time as an apprentice. You may wish to start full-time and build your skills and confidence before moving on to an apprenticeship. This department focuses on building your confidence in learning, employability and independent living with all programmes tailored to each individual learner, with effective teaching that involves providing each student with different avenues to learning, often in the same classroom. We have dedicated foundation learning areas and experienced tutors who will help you reach your full potential. This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. In order to make the most of the course you must be keen to try a variety of vocational options, including animal care, horticulture, art, catering, sport, childcare and ICT, all designed to help you decide what you might like to do as a job. You may study on this course for 1-4 years depending on your level of entry. These courses are ideal if you enjoy practical work and would like to experience a range of vocational options while being supported with your learning. In order to make the most of the course you must be keen to try a variety of vocational options, including animal care, horticulture, art, catering, sport, childcare and ICT, all designed to help you decide what you might like to do as a job. You will learn new skills, build your teamwork skills, your independence and your confidence, as well as improve your English and maths. These courses run for 3-4 days per week depending on the level of study and are aimed towards 16-24 year olds with additional needs.
