Cornwall College Lecturer Appointed Regional Convener for Leading Ecology Institute

Cornwall College University Centre at the Eden Project is proud to announce that Dr Chris Smillie, Programme Manager for MSc Land and Ecological Restoration, has been appointed South West Regional Convener for the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

CIEEM is the UK’s leading professional body representing ecologists and environmental managers. Dr Smillie’s appointment places the University Centre at the centre of national conversations about the future of the ecology profession.

With a career spanning consultancy, higher education and international fieldwork, Dr Smillie brings a wealth of experience to the role. His position as Regional Convener is expected to create new opportunities for Cornwall College University Centre and its students. These include stronger connections with industry professionals, enriched academic content and an expanded network for student development.

“I’m now plugged into a network that can inform the education activities that we have here but also provides a network for students,” said Dr Smillie.

“It’s good for the students, it’s good for their employment prospects, it’s good for developing the programme according to what professionals want.”

The CIEEM South West region spans Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. As Convener, Dr Smillie will lead efforts to strengthen professional engagement across this area through events, collaborative projects and career development activities. His vision is to create a more connected and inclusive ecology community.

“My role isn’t just about bringing the committee together. It’s about creating events that appeal not only to CIEEM members, but also to wildlife charities, consultancies and research organisations,” Dr Smillie explained.

“The aim is to build a broader network of people working in conservation and ecology across the South West and beyond.”

This new role also positions the Eden Project and Cornwall College University Centre as a central meeting point for ecology professionals across the region. By hosting events and sharing resources, the University Centre can contribute to wider industry discussions while offering students direct access to the professional landscape.

Dr Smillie said: “We’re also the only provider in the country offering a postgraduate apprenticeship in ecology so being able to combine that with CIEEM’s support and reach is invaluable.”

The Ecological Restoration programme is currently undergoing revalidation to strengthen its vocational focus and ensure it continues to meet evolving industry standards. Through guest lectures, placement opportunities and partnerships with sector leaders, the programme prepares graduates for real-world environmental challenges.

Dr Smillie’s leadership will help shape discussions on key regional priorities. These include biodiversity net gain, planning legislation, peatland and wetland restoration and the emerging importance of coastal and marine habitats.
