PM visits Cornwall College during National Apprenticeship Week

Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, paid a special visit to Cornwall College Camborne on Thursday (Feb 8th) in celebration of National Apprenticeship Week.

Accompanied by John Evans, principal and chief executive of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), the PM explored the thriving hub of innovation in vocational training.

During his visit, Mr Sunak spoke to motor vehicle, engineering and electric vehicle students, and expressed his admiration for the College’s cutting-edge Battery Bay, a pioneering UK-first initiative, and the exclusive Heavy Goods Vehicle training area, the sole facility in Devon & Cornwall dedicated to the advancement of this critical sector.

Rishi Sunak said: “It was incredible to visit Cornwall College and I was blown away by the talent and skill-sets of the apprentices there.

“And in National Apprenticeship week, it’s great to see so many apprenticeships in action – not only kickstarting careers but ensuring people are earning and learning from the get-go.

“Since 2010, this Conservative government has created a world-class apprenticeship system from the ground up, with over 5.7 million apprentices trained across the UK.

“I am delighted to see Cornwall College helping to lead that charge, arming the future workforce with the tools they need to succeed.”

“In our view, not everyone needs to go to university; you can start earning and learning at the same time – It’s a great way to start a career,” he added.

TCCG is the top performing college for apprenticeships in the South West, as well as being the top performing further education college in Cornwall, based on all qualifications for all ages.

John Evans, principal & CE of TCCG, said: “We were delighted to be able to welcome the Prime Minister to help us mark National Apprenticeship Week at Cornwall College Camborne.

“The visit highlights the vital role of further education colleges in bridging the skills gap and training the workforce of tomorrow, and we were thrilled to have the chance to showcase our dedication to top quality education and training to the Prime Minister,” John added.

Rishi Sunak also took part in hands-on activities, joined by George Eustice MP for Camborne, Redruth, and Hayle.

National Apprenticeship Week is a Department for Education initiative that recognises the achievements of apprentices around the country and the positive impact they make to communities, businesses and the wider economy.
