Course information

Are you ready to take the fast lane into the automotive industry? At St Austell College, we’re offering an incredible opportunity to train as an Auto-care Technician—a role that blends hands-on technical expertise with customer service excellence.

As an Auto-care Technician, you’ll become the go-to professional for keeping cars, car-derived vans, and light goods vehicles in top condition. You’ll work in dynamic environments such as Auto-care or “Fast-Fit” Centres, which could be part of a national network or a thriving local business. This is more than just fixing cars—it’s about delivering outstanding service and building trust with every customer.

What makes this role exciting?
You’ll master a unique mix of skills:
• Technical know-how: Use advanced tools, diagnostic equipment, and your problem-solving skills to identify and repair faults.
• Customer service excellence: Learn how to handle calls, manage customer expectations, and turn challenges into positive experiences.
• Sales and business insight: Understand how your work drives commercial success and develop the confidence to upsell services effectively.

You’ll gain both practical and theoretical knowledge of vehicle systems while sharpening your communication, teamwork, and self-management skills. Whether you’re working independently or as part of a team, you’ll play a vital role in delivering high standards of workmanship and contributing to the success of your centre.

Individual employers will set their own selection criteria for applicants. It is however recommended that candidates can demonstrate an interest in the occupation as well as an ability to work in an organised and methodical way to identify and solve problems; also demonstrate an ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their apprenticeship end-point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or legacy statement, the English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification are an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language.

Progression to level 3 apprenticeship after the 2 years at level 2
