Learn some basic signing with our communication specialist, Nicky Varney. Nicky uses sign in her daily support of learners, as a Higher Learning Support Practitioner, and is qualified to BSL Level 2. Nicky also uses other methods of communication in her work, such as Braille and Widget.

This course will be delivered at Cornwall College St Austell campus, and will be offered on two other occasions this academic year, both in college, for those that prefer in person training, and once online to support others unable to travel.

  What You Will Learn

A break down of the course and what will it will include:


Week 1

To learn what different types of sign language there are.
To learn signs for some greetings, the alphabet and to ask “What’s your name?” and say “My name is …”

Extension – “Where do you live?” and “I live…”


Week 2

To learn to sign numbers, family signs, to ask questions about age and questions that need a number in the answer and to ask and answer questions about families.

Extension task – Days of the week.


Week 3

To learn to sign different food signs, including fruit and vegetables, to ask and answer questions using like/don’t like and to ask and answer questions using favourite.


Week 4

To learn signs for verbs, including directional verbs, animal signs, question words and have a mini conversation in sign language using everything that you have learnt.

I chose Cornwall College as the hours for the access course suited my family commitments. After attending an open day, I was also impressed with the support available to students.

The support I have received from my lecturers, my tutor and fellow students has been amazing. After being out of education for 15 years the access course has given me the skills and confidence to progress onto university. The learning curve over the last 9 months has been incredible and I will be forever grateful to those that supported me.

This degree offers an excellent opportunity to increase both your academic skills and your employability. Your second and third years allow you to select optional modules which suit your career aspirations. For example, if you are interested in a career in mental health support you could choose the modules on Psychological Processes and Psychology in Practice. An interest in health promotion could lead you to choose the module in Health Promotion, whereas an interest in developing as a leader could see you choosing the Leadership and Management module. For applicants interested in issues around equality and diversity, there are module choices in Inclusive Practice and Aspects of Rural Life This programme is studied as a part time top-up where you will complete Year 3 only. It also develops critical analysis, understanding research methods, problem solving, ITC, professional development, developing your CV and interview techniques and gaining workplace experience. Developing your communication skills, work-related experience and the opportunity to recognise and consider the relationship between the subjects you study in college and your actual working environment is encouraged. The Professional Practice and the Development Through Work modules require you to undertake 120 hours of placement within the health and care field. The modules are designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop your personal and employability skills.

Access to Nursing, Health and Social Care

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College St Austell


A fast-track, academic Level 3 course in Nursing, Health and Social Care starting in January 2022. This course is for adults which, once completed will provide learners with the entry requirements to progress onto a university degree or Higher Apprenticeship in healthcare. This is an opportunity to complete a 60 credit Diploma in 22 weeks instead of 35. The Access to HE Diploma is validated by the Cmbridge Access Validating Agency which is licensed by the QAA.

Assistant Practitioners In Healthcare Diploma (Higher Apprenticeship)

Level 5 • Work-based • Cornwall College St Austell


The qualification is for individuals already working in a healthcare environment like nursing homes, clinical health care settings, hospital staff working in clinical areas, residential health care settings (that have a clinical aspect to the job role) or domiciliary settings (that have a clinical aspect to the job role). You can train to an Assistant Practitioner level while continuing working in practice.
