Olympic weightlifting coach joins college teaching team

A class of Cornish sport students are delighted to have an Olympic weightlifting coach as their new lecturer.

Olympic Weightlifting Coach and Functional Fitness Trainer, Kayley Elms, has joined Cornwall College Camborne to work with their sport students.

FdSc Sport, Health and Fitness student at Cornwall College Camborne, Rosie Pascoe, said: It is absolutely amazing to have Kayley supporting us through our degree.

“Her strength and conditioning knowledge is truly inspiring! The techniques she is coaching us can be applied within our assignment so it’s great to be able to understand each movement and have fun whilst doing so.”

Fellow student, Shannon Bray, agreed that it is “fantastic to be working with someone directly within the strength and conditioning industry.

She added: “This not only helps us with assignment work but teaches us movements and techniques from sports that some of us don’t get the opportunity to take part in.”

Kayley has been interested about movement from a young age and is passionate about the important of fitness for everyone from a young age.

“As a functional fitness and Olympic weightlifting coach, I’ve seen the impact these sports can bring to people’s lives. As a coach I’ve worked with children as young as 3 up to grandparents looking to keep a level of fitness to uphold their independence,” she explained.

The new lecturer has also seen the impact fitness can have on mental health and has watched the confidence it builds in people of all ages.

“I can’t wait to work with students of all ages and backgrounds creating a new opportunity for them to blossom whether it to be physically, socially or to improve mental health,” Kayley continued.

“Bringing functional fitness and Olympic lifting to schools and colleges creates an opportunity for all and teaches students from a young age how their bodies should move. I hope it will bring a love for movement that will impact their lives longterm.”

The FdSc Sport, Health and Fitness degree at Cornwall College Camborne allows students to look at everything from field and laboratory fitness testing protocols, to coaching in a range of different settings. Learners study and develop all the essential skills needed as a coach, aspiring teacher, health promotion and training or continuing professional development personal trainer.

Curriculum Area Manager for Sport at Cornwall College Camborne, Louise Fletcher, said: “The sport team are extremely excited to have Kayley on board with us.

“We are very fortunate and grateful to have someone with the breadth of experience and knowledge that Kayley has.

“We are looking forward to developing the partnership further and expanding the course offerings in our curriculum area.”
