FdSc Counselling Psychology with Criminology

Psychology Criminology Courses An exciting opportunity to study a brand-new foundation degree at the Cornwall Counselling Institute. You will learn core psychological theory and apply this to clinical and criminal populations. You will also study the wider systemic causes of anti-social behaviour and the impact this has on the individual and society. We will also explore contemporary therapeutic interventions used with perpetrators and victims of crime and there is an opportunity for you to learn and practice counselling skills from professional industry experts.

Our Psychology with Criminology programme will be of special interest to students who are fascinated by both psychology and criminal justice as it aims to provide an excellent grounding for those looking to pursue careers within the criminal justice system, forensic psychology or social policy.

The modules over two years will cover the following areas of study:

• The History of Mental Health and Development of Counselling Psychology
• Personality Theory
• Abnormal Psychology and Crime
• Neuropsychology and Dysfunction
• Contemporary Therapeutic Paradigms
• Counselling Skills Practice
• Sociological Crime Theory
• Developmental Psychology, Youth Crime and Gang Culture
• Penology, Punishment and Recidivism
• Victimology
• Therapeutic Approaches to Offender Rehabilitation
• Criminal Profiling

Entry requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant Level 3 qualification in an appropriate subject area. Successful completion of Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at Level 3 in an appropriate subject. GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science.

Alternatives at Level 2 (Functional Skills) may be considered.

Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of methods. These include academic essays, presentations, tests and observations of skills practice.

Progression

Once you have successfully completed the FdSc you will be able to apply for BSc top-up degrees or you can potentially train as a professional counsellor on the L5 Diploma at the Cornwall Counselling Institute.
