Course information

This new course is aimed at learners that already have some experience in furniture making, including a good level of hand skills and a sound knowledge of materials and making techniques.

The objective of this course in to build upon these skills and learn how they can be used to develop and manufacture commercially viable furniture products.

The course will be based around three projects in which learners will research, design, prototype and plan the production of their own furniture within a workshop environment.

The three projects will include

• A batch manufactured chair project,
• A mass manufactured dressing table or chest project
• A bespoke fitted furniture project.

The projects will cover, frame construction, carcass construction and engineered board construction.

The projects will begin with a broad brief. Students will research and design a response to this brief which will include material and technical experiments and the creation of a prototype product.

They will also plan the production process of this product and create the necessary templates, jigs and formers required for production.

In addition to the core projects, the course will also look at other aspects of manufacturing such as sustainability, health and safety and the role of the supervisor in managing a workshop.
