This foundation degree has been specifically designed and written to ensure that you join the industry fit for purpose, professional and with the ability to respond to its rapidly changing demands. This is achieved by combining formal lectures, hands-on practical experience, the embedding of work-based learning and the incorporation of preparation for Cisco vendor qualifications. Resources are exceptional with access to specialist computer suites, Cisco Regional Network Academy networking facilities, Microsoft Professional Training suites, test centres and an open access suite. The programme offers you a common first year with the opportunity to specialise in software development or computer networking in the second year. The content for Cisco networking qualifications are embedded within your foundation degree which will help you to gain employment on completion of your programme. We have liaised closely with local industry to identify local needs and the Sector Skills Council, e-skills, to identify national trends in demand. The programme is broad-based, giving a good grounding in current practice and developments. You have the opportunity to pursue areas of special interest, through optional modules, to focus on computer networking or software development, together with your integrated project undertaken in Year 2. During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus and at our premises on Tolcarne Beach in Newquay. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. . This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears.

FdSc Sport, Health & Fitness

Level 5 • Full-time • Sports & Fitness department


If you have a passion to lead others in the sports, health and fitness industry, then this is the course for you. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that you will have many opportunities to apply your practice, with consistent reflection on theory to practice. You’ll be looking at everything: field & laboratory fitness testing protocols, coaching in a range of settings, health consultation, diet planning, psychological & biomechanical assessment, sport development and business planning. You’ll be studying and developing all of the essential skills you need as a coach, aspiring teacher, health promotion/training or continuing professional development personal trainer. A broad range or current research will be reviewed and available for you to support your learning– with access to key lectures, seminars, guest speakers, workshops, a fully equipped sports facility including; sports hall, dance studio, gym, 3g football pitch and fitness testing suit. Assessment is through written assignments, presentations, practical and theoretical exams, and a research project in the second year. You will be assessed working on real-life projects, such as coaching sport in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport and physical activity in the wider community. You may also carry out fitness testing on athletes from local sports clubs. This foundation degree introducing you to higher education academic and essential work skills. All lecturing staff are university graduates and many are qualified to postgraduate level as well as being involved in research and professional development in the areas of sports science, exercise referral, health, sports injuries and coaching. BA (Hons) Games Design For Industry

Level 6 • Full-time • Arts & Media department


This 1 year top up, full time, innovative and exciting new games programme has been designed to allow students from the HND or foundation degree (and others where appropriate) to progress to an honours degree to develop an independent, autonomous practice, but with skills and attributes to be part of any team within any typical games design studio. This programme aims to facilitate and equip graduates with the expertise, enthusiasm and flexibility for a future in developing games and their content. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of Agile, entrepreneurship, team management and the techniques and skills needed by the games industry to get you that dream job, or to start your own independent games company. We specialise in providing a typical studio set up with small class sizes to ensure you get excellent support and advice for your studies. You will have greater access to staff and resources, as well as practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in your chosen area of specialism within the games industry. Tutors will facilitate your independent research into advanced game design skills and techniques reflecting your particular specialism throughout the programme. Team production of prototypes will be explored, as well as methods to improve immersion, narrative and visual impact. You will be encouraged to investigate design innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, to develop new methods of enhancing gameplay, and simulation whilst receiving career and business advice specifically tailored to your individual aspirations. Visits to games festivals such as EGX Rezzed will also inform student practice. You will be encouraged to work creatively and professionally to design and communicate concepts through visuals, prototypes, 3D/2D game assets, game design documents, pitches and presentations often to professionals within the industry. You will use industry standard software such as Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Maya and Mudbox etc), the full Adobe Master collection, UE4 and others. You will also have access to VR headsets such as Oculus Rifts and Vives, excellent sound labs, video cameras, Kinect cameras and blue/green screens etc. Graduates have gone on to work in games studios such as Splash Damage or set up their own independent studios. This is a full-time course; typically, students should expect to spend 35 – 40 hours per week on a combination of taught and self-directed study. Each module is delivered over a 15-week Study Block, which typically comprises 12 weeks of learning and teaching, and 3 weeks of assessment and feedback. Students will engage in a variety of learning activities, including lectures, seminars, private and group tutorials, specialist workshops.

Animal Management Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


Our Level 3 Animal Management Diploma offers you the choice of university study or employment on successful completion of your course. There are one and two year options available with this pathway and we will work with you to decide which is best for you. This is a 2 year course but you will need to pass the first year in order to progress onto the second. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. With access to an array of animal collections on campus you will gain the practical training you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry. Our Newquay campus has classrooms at Newquay Zoo and Blue Reef Aquarium, designed to immerse you in the animal world and ensure you learn all you can from the expert members of staff who work there. Newquay students will have access to the animal centres at Duchy College. We offer three options for you to start your studies in the animal management industry depending on your GCSE results, our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal should your GCSEs not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 2 or Level 3.

The course is delivered here at the Camborne campus within the dedicated furniture suite where we have a large maker’s workshop, a design room, a power tool room and a finishing room as well as access to the wood machine/ joinery workshop. Within the workshops you will have practical access to equipment and staff that will enable you to progress your design to completion. You will have time to learn techniques that you can further develop. We are the only furniture provider in Cornwall and one of only a few furniture apprenticeship courses in the UK. We expect our learners to work to very high standards and this is reflected in the fact that one of our learners won Gold at the National World skills UK competition and has recently picked up the apprentice of the year for the Cornwall College Group. Painting & Decorating Apprenticeship

Level 2 • Work-based • Construction department


A career in painting and decorating can offer you a wide range of experiences if you are a practical person with creative flair. You may work as an independent sole trader or for a larger construction company decorating new builds or even on industrial jobs sandblasting and spray painting on a large scale. This Level 2 apprenticeship continues your professional development in painting and decorating. Introducing more advanced and complex techniques such as creating specialist finishes and applying and creating colour. You must complete both Level 1 and 2 qualifications to ensure your skills and technical ability are of a high enough standard to start a career in painting and decorating. To work in a construction or building site on new builds you will also need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) accreditation that we can provide as part of the course. This apprenticeship takes two years to complete, working while you earn and learn, by attending college one day per week. You will need to find a business that will employ you as an apprentice throughout your training.
