Welding Skills - ARC/MIG (Evening)

This course is perfect if you are a complete beginner or have limited welding knowledge. Ideal if you want to learn a new skill, if you are creative, if you want to repair your own car or even a garden gate. On this course you will learn a basic understanding of the different Welding processes used in industry and at home. Gaining a basic understanding of Manual Metal ARC welding (stick) and Metal Arc Gas Shielded (MIG), covering Flat and H/V single weld beads, re-joining of runs, welding outside corner joints, Butt welds and horizontal/vertical fillet welds on 3-6mm thick plate. The MIG/Mags welding section will cover the setting-up of the machine (gas, volts and wire speed etc) for correct operation to deposit welds in the horizontal/vertical and Flat welding positions, material thickness 1-6mm. " You will require fire resistant overalls and steel toe capped boots/shoes for this course. Also due to Health and Safety guidelines we would recommend that you wear glasses instead of contact lenses if you require them. This course runs on a Wednesday evening from 6.00pm to 8.00pm for 8 weeks. Welding Basic To Advanced (British Standard)

This is a welding course for all; if you are a complete beginner with limited welding knowledge or an advanced welder requiring the British Standard 4872 coding. The Advanced Welding is British Standard 4872 training and testing part 1 (steel) and part 2 (aluminium), the assessments are carried out by a Welding Institute Qualified, CSWIP trained Weld Tester. On this practical hands-on course, you will have the opportunity to learn various processes and procedures, whilst working towards a recognised industry standard in welding, if desired. The welding processes available are: T.I.G-Tungsten Inert Gas. M.M.A-Manual Metal ARC known as arc or stick. MIG/MAGS-Metal Arc Gas Shielded known as mig. Materials: Stainless steel, aluminium, mild steel any thickness. Positions: Horizontal, vertical H/V, flat, vertical and overhead. Training and testing on all welding processes can be delivered in your company using your own equipment, as a bespoke course. The delivery and assessments are carried out by a Welding Institute Qualified, CSWIP trained Weld Tester. PPE will be required for the course: Appropriate PPE must be worn in the workshop (cotton boiler suit and steel toe capped boots must be brought by the candidate, although we can provide gloves and masks for the duration of the course). NB. Please be aware that due to the nature of the activity, contact lenses should not be worn in the welding workshop, although glasses may be worn with safety specs or goggles over the top. Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship Standard

Level 3 • Work-based • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


This occupation is found in the advanced manufacturing engineering and engineering construction sectors. The broad purpose of the occupation is to carry out metal fabrication work using things such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plate and metal sheet etc. Work includes manufacturing bridges, oil rigs, ships, petro-chemical installations, cranes, platforms, aircraft, automotive and machinery parts, sheet metal enclosures, equipment supports, and anything that can be fabricated out of metal. Fabricators can work alone or in teams, in factories or on operational sites. Fabricators use a large range of metals including steel, aluminium and titanium at a range of thickness's from 0.5mm up to over 20mm. The size and weight of the fabrications can range from components that can easily be picked up by hand, to massive structures that require several cranes to manipulate. In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with planners, supervisors, inspectors, designers, welders, pipe fitters, fitters, machinists, riggers, steel erectors, stores personnel, painters and many others involved in manufacturing, production, maintenance and repair. An employee in this occupation will be responsible for the quality and accuracy of their own work whilst ensuring it conforms to a relevant specification such as an engineering drawing or an international standard. Fabricators are also responsible for the health, safety and environmental (HS&E) protection of themselves and others around them.
