As a qualified HGV specialist mechanic you could work in an amazingly diverse industry, whether servicing, repairing, working managing a fl­eet or as a mobile specialist, once qualified there are lots of career opportunities. Modern technology means you won’t just be working with sockets, wrenches and pliers to repair engines, with modern heavy goods vehicles now requiring computer diagnostics for fault finding and repairs you will become familiar with the latest technology, repair techniques and testing.

We offer a range of professional qualifications and training that will allow you to become a qualified mechanic, whatever level you start at.

This advanced apprenticeship will provide you with the chance to become a fully qualified heavy vehicle mechanic. The course will offer you the chance to gain higher practical skills training in our state-of-the-art workshops and working garages.

  What You Will Learn

By the end of this course you will be able to learn how to understand and diagnose faults on a range of systems, gain the knowledge and experience to be able to supervise others and some understanding of how to run your own business if that’s your goal or work to become a diagnostic technician.

Areas you will cover include:

Engine faults
Transmission issues
Steering and suspension
Chassis rectification
Electrical and electronic diagnostic testing
You will also work towards developing your skills in removing and fitting light vehicle mechanical, electrical and trim (MET) components and non-permanent body panels.

  Entry Requirements

To have completed the Level 2 course and have English and maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above or relevant experience and knowledge.

  Progression

Into the workplace or meet your ambition of setting up your own business. You may also wish to do further specialist training in light vehicle, bodywork and painting or inspection and testing to broaden your expertise and develop your career.

If you have an interest in heavy vehicles like HGV’s, Cranes, other large vehicle you see on the road and have your sights set on becoming a mechanic, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in a career in automotive engineering. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our workshop, learning by doing as you work on a range of vehicles over 7.5 tonne. You will be looking at everything including engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, and electronics. If it’s on a HGV, you’ll be studying it and developing all of the essential skills you need as a mechanic, carrying out maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course. Our workshop features industry-standard equipment and kit, exactly like a working garage. We also have a strong partnership with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), so employers know an automotive qualification from The Cornwall College Group means you have the very best skills as a mechanic or technician. So, if you’re a bit of a petrol/ Heavy vehicle fan and want a career working with Heavy vehicles, this is the best place to start. As a Level 1 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to the automotive industry and developing your essential skills.
