Foundation Learning Independence Pathway: Personal Progress Towards Independence

Foundation learning student This course is part of our FL Independence pathway, and is aimed to develop your independence. This is achieved through knowledge and skills that will support your transition to adulthood, with a clear focus on developing your personal progress in this area.

On this pathway you will work towards individual personal targets linked to different areas of independence, which may include:

Learning to travel by bus or train;
Independent living at home, e.g. basic home cooking skills or keeping the home clean and tidy;
Independent living in the community, which may include learning to go shopping or going to a restaurant;
Personal development, such as learning to keep safe and the importance of staying healthy.

We will work with you, your parents and carers in designing your programme of study, setting your targets and assessing progress inside and outside of College.

Our vision is to support you to be INDEPENDENT, CONFIDENT AND RESILIENT so that you are well-prepared to engage with the wider community. The Personal Progress Towards Independence course is a great way to develop in all of these areas.

If you are up to 24 years old and have EHCP (Education, Health and Care plan) you would be eligible to do this course.

What you will learn

Within this pathway you will focus on developing your independence and you could also develop your vocational skills. We will support you in developing your skills in using English and maths too. Aside from the academic skills, we will work with you to develop a range of social and interaction skills to help prepare you for your next steps.

Entry requirements

You have to be working towards or at Entry Level 1 within the areas of English & maths and have an interest in developing your independence.

Work experience

Work experience is not a requirement of this course, however employability skills will be at the forefront of your studies during National Careers Week and internal work experience opportunities may be available in our Foundation Learning run shop / Coffee shop, The Hub at our Camborne campus

If you choose to study at our St Austell Campus opportunities may be available in our Foundation learning run VIEW shop and Coffee shop.

Assessment

Your assessment and progress will be based on an individually tailored RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress & Achievement) programme that focusses on individual targets and goals which are linked to outcomes set within your Education, Health and care Plan and / or your individual goals and aspirations. Throughout the year your targets will be regularly reviewed and a portfolio of your learning will be produced.

Progression

Once you have completed this pathway you may wish to progress on to other pathways within Foundation Learning such as FL Skills or FL Works. If you leave College, you will leave with skills that will enable you to be more independent at home or in the community.
