Working independently and in collaboration, you will develop your portfolio, establish broad theoretical and practical skills, and produce entertainment projects for a variety of audiences. Mastering the synthesis of visual storytelling with the latest technology using traditional and digital media practices.

This course will introduce you to a number of specialist tracks to build your artist voice and prepare you with an adaptable skillset for progression opportunities in a multitude of careers that bring narratives to life, from major production companies to up-and-coming independent studios.

During this two-year course you will explore two core routes of study, Digital Concept Art and Graphic Design building a powerful portfolio to use for submission to Higher Education or Entry level posts in industry. The later terms designed with flexibility in mind, allowing students to customize their coursework toward exploring a specialty of their choosing to showcase in a final project.

What you will learn

Learners will explore and develop skills within the creative industries during their studies through a broad range of workshops, projects, masterclasses and work experience.

You will develop skills within concept design focusing on the proficiency of the following skills: Thinking Process & Conceptual Methodology, Storytelling, Communication, 2D & 3D Proficiency, Painting & Lighting, Design Knowledge & Critical Thinking, and Professional Awareness.

Within Graphic Design you will expand your knowledge on the fundamentals of colour, rhythm, and pattern in design. Exploring abstract design from shapes and use this to create innovative simple and complex design motifs. Building this theoretical knowledge to successfully convey denotative and connotative messages and experimenting with letter form through developing a comprehension of typographic terminology and frameworks.

You will be given the opportunity to explore this skillset through live briefs and projects creating experimental compositions in the form of consumer products.

Entry requirements

You’ll have four grade C/4 qualifications, one of which is in English or maths. You’ll be ready to discuss your specific digital art interests at interview stage and you should bring with you an example (Portfolio) of work.

Work experience

You’ll complete work experience during the course, and these could include working with production companies locally, creating new content for local business – video, print, and animation. This is outside the classroom, in a real working environment. Begin thinking about what you might like to do and think about how you will get there.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a range of developmental projects throughout the year, with feedback from staff identifying your strengths to develop and skills to improve. Once those formative modules are complete, you will design, pitch and create your own final project that will determine your mark for the entire year of work.
