If you’re not sure of what you want to do but think it might be in construction, then this is the starter course for you.

The course has been designed to give you time to try three different trade areas, Carpentry, Bricklaying and Plumbing.

You will also develop your confidence, team skills, maths, communication, Health & Safety and employability skills. We will also revisit British values, Equality & Diversity, and Prevent. Extra-curricular activities will be organised to ensure we have fun along the way.

In carpentry you will learn how to handle tools safely and construct halving joints, housing joints and framing joints.

In bricklaying you will learn how to set out for brick and block walls, tiling, and concreting.

In plumbing you will learn how to bend and join copper pipe, plastic pipe and steal pipe using a variety of jointing methods.

Your course will be supported by Maths and English to ensure you are not only employable but meet the criteria to embark on your next course.

You will also engage with a work experience programme to show you are ready for the workplace or identify any training required to ensure you understand the requirements of the workplace.

You will develop your use and knowledge of a variety of tools and how to maintain them. Your time-keeping and work ethic will be monitored from day one and should you need additional support this will be provided.

This Level 1 course is all about introducing you to the construction industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced trade professionals and instructors, who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

  What You Will Learn

This one-year introduction will explain the tools, components and terminology used in the construction industry you will learn how the industry works and how they interact with one another. By gaining an introduction to all three trades you will be prepared for the more specialised practical approach to your chosen career path the following year. This in turn will ensure you are on the right career path for you.

  Entry Requirements

There no set entry requirements. We are looking for motivated and interested individuals

  Work Experience

3 weeks (90 hours) of any construction based areas 

  Assessment

You will be assessed through practical assignments and through theory papers linked to health & safety.

  Progression

Once you’ve finished this Level 1 course, you’ll have a real understanding of what the construction industry is like and which areas best suit you, and be ready to move on to the more specific trade course at Level 1 or 2. We also offer apprenticeships across the construction industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider that option. Your Personal Tutor will help and guide you through out your course.

Basic Plumbing Studies

This is a one-year Level 1 introductory course to plumbing, teaching you the essential health & safety practices you will need to work in a trade profession. Often called upon in an emergency, if you can fix a leaking pipe, mend a broken toilet, or repair a central heating system, you will be hailed a hero. An experienced plumber should have the ability to work in a variety of different environments and during your time with us we will teach you the practical, hands-on skills and industry legislation to enable you to do this, either as an employee or running your own business. We offer both full-time study and apprenticeship options for you to train to be a professional plumber. We offer this Level 1 introductory year if you do not have the required grades to start at Level 2.

Bench Joinery Diploma

Level 2 • Part-time • Cornwall College St Austell


This course will give you opportunities for work both locally and if you want to travel the world. The course will enable you to take your Joinery skills far beyond the usual DIY level and give you an understanding of general building construction along with the part a Bench Joiner plays in the manufacture of building components and how they fit into the construction of all sorts of buildings. The course will enable you to work confidently in a Joinery workshop. All of our training takes place in our state of the art joinery workshop to add a bit more work realism to the course that reflects the equipment available in industry. We have a large range to tools and equipment for you to practice with, you’ll also have access during the course to our wood machine shop to experience the machines we have. Your teaching will be delivered by highly experienced qualified trade’s people who have many years’ experience of working in the construction industry as bench joiners.

NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction)- Site Carpentry (OSAT)

Level 3 • Distance Learning • Cornwall College St Austell


Are you working in the construction industry but do not have a NVQ qualification in your specialist trade? If so On Site Assessment & Training (OSAT) is your route to gaining recognition for the skills that you possess. OSAT allows you to continue working full time on site with no college attendance needed. A specialist assessor will work with you in the workplace to guide you through your qualification ensuring you know exactly what to do to successfully complete your NVQ qualification. Completing the level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations Site Carpentry will make you eligible to apply for a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card. ‘Completing an OSAT was ideal for me.
