Carpentry and Joinery Diploma

Level 1 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


If you are interested in working in the construction industry, specifically learning a wood trade we offer a choice of specialist training, in bench joinery and site carpentry. Site carpentry focuses on woodwork essential to a construction site, and includes fitting ­flooring, roofing frame installation, partition wall construction and stair building. Bench joinery is predominantly more workshop based, where you make and prepare materials for installation on a construction site. This Level 1 course is an ideal introduction to working with wood in the construction industry if you have no prior knowledge or understanding of the trade. We offer specialist training and qualifications in both bench joinery and site carpentry. There is opportunity to cross over between the two disciplines if you start down one path but then decide it is not right for you. Please note: As part of your course you may be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

Site Carpentry Apprenticeship

The course will enable you to take your carpentry skills far beyond the usual DIY level and give you an understanding of general building construction along with the part a carpenter plays in the construction of al sorts of buildings. The course will enable you to work confidently in a construction related work place, this could be on a large construction site putting up timber frame, you could specialise in fitting kitchens for a local diy store or you could work on a film set for the latest blockbuster in Hollywood!. All of our training takes place in a construction related environment and with carpentry you’ll be working on your own timber frame house either in our large workshops or outside to add a bit more site realism to the course. We have a large range to tools and equipment for you to practice with, you’ll also have access during the course to our wood machine shop to experience the machines we have. Your teaching will be delivered by highly experienced qualified trade’s people who have many years’ experience of working in the construction industry.

Site Carpentry Apprenticeship

The level 3 Site Carpentry qualification are for learners who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills that can lead to meaningful employment in the construction industry as a site carpenter. This qualification will also open doors to employment across the world in place such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. You will also be able to access university courses on completion of this course as past leaners have gone on to become site managers, project managers and Architects.

Construction Multi-Skills Level 1

If you’re not sure of what you want to do but think it might be in construction, then this is the starter course for you. The course has been designed to give you time to try three different trade areas, Carpentry, Bricklaying and Plumbing. You will also develop your confidence, team skills, maths, communication, Health & Safety and employability skills. We will also revisit British values, Equality & Diversity, and Prevent. Extra-curricular activities will be organised to ensure we have fun along the way. In carpentry you will learn how to handle tools safely and construct Halving joints, Housing joints and framing joints. In bricklaying you will learn how to set out for brick and block walls, tiling, and concreting In plumbing you will learn how to bend and join copper pipe, plastic pipe and steal pipe using a variety of jointing methods. Your course will be supported by Math and English to ensure you are not only employable but meet the criteria to embark on your next course. You will also engage with a work experience programme to show you are ready for the workplace or identify any training required to ensure you understand the requirements of the workplace. You will develop your use and knowledge of a variety of tools and how to maintain them. Your time keeping and work ethic will be monitored from day one and should you need additional support this will be provided.
