Do you love Art or Design? Are you an inventive, creative person? Would you like to broaden your skills and learn how to develop your ideas, so that you could one day earn a living from your creativity? This course is perfect for students who like to study in a practical, hands-on way. You will explore a wide range of materials, processes and technical skills, as well as developing good study skills, communication skills, employability skills and self-confidence. The qualification is structured to provide time for gallery visits, collaborative projects and work experience, alongside regular sketchbook work, contextual studies, specialist workshops and portfolio building. The timetable also allows you to study for your Maths and English GCSE’s should you need to. Our bright and spacious art studio is a friendly and inspiring place, where students are encouraged to experiment freely, to express their individuality, to try out new ways of working and to broaden their ideas through slide-shows, discussions and research. The course begins with fun projects and a variety of skills workshops that are taught to the whole group. Over time you will be able to steer projects to be themed to your own interests or chosen art or design specialism. You will soon become a more independent learner who is able to come up with original ideas, write your own project proposals, develop sketchbook pages and create finished pieces that you are proud of.

Art & Design CAVA Access To HE Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Arts & Media department


Are you are a creative person? Have you been thinking about returning to education, to study for a degree in art and design, but don’t feel that you are quite ready? If the answer to these questions is yes, then this is the course for you! The Access courses are designed to support mature learners (19+) so that they can progress confidently onto a degree at the end of the year. You will be supported with that application through UCAS. This course is just one year of study, so it is intense and fast paced, but at the same time it will introduce you to an exciting range of creative skills and ideas. As it is only one year, learners are expected to spend between 5-8 hours home study a week. In the first two terms you will have an introduction to: 2D skills, mixed media, colour theory, print, photography, graphic design, textiles, life drawing, 3D skills and ceramics. These will be taught by specialist staff mainly through a series of practical workshops. You will also develop your research, writing, and other study skills through the theory units; all of which are designed to prepare you for study in Higher Education. In the third term you will be able to write your own brief and display the work in our end of year exhibition. You will have your own generous studio space for the duration of the course, where you can create and display your work. In addition you will be able to use the dedicated workshops for Photography, Print, 3D and Ceramics. This level 3 qualification is all about engaging, supporting and developing your skills and ideas, to enable you to gain the confidence to progress onto a creative arts degree.

Art & Design Practice Extended Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Arts & Media department


The Level 3 Extended Diploma Art and Design is an exciting two year course; in the first year you are encouraged to explore all areas of the arts, to achieve the Diploma. You will begin to determine your specialist pathways when you progress onto the Extended Diploma, in the second year. At the start of each year you are allocated your own studio space, which you can make your own and use as a base throughout the year. In the first year you will take part in a wide range of practical workshops in our studios, in order to develop your skills in drawing, painting, working with mixed media, graphics and digital media, textiles, printmaking, ceramics, photography and 3 dimensional work. Projects and workshops are linked to relevant creative careers, to help you understand where your skills might be used, in the creative industries. The year is completed with a Final Project and a Summer Exhibition. The second year is an opportunity for you to decide on your specialist pathway, such as Fashion, Textiles, Photography, Fine Art, Graphic Design etc. All the work you have done to date is organised into a portfolio, either for job and apprenticeship applications, or university entrance via UCAS. Focused support for progression is given throughout the Autumn term, whilst practical projects continue to provide opportunities for you to take greater responsibility for your own practice, including decision making and time management. There will be an emphasis on projects negotiated between you and your tutors. This year culminates in an extensive Final Major Project, which is exhibited in the Summer Exhibition. Underpinning all aspects of the course is an engaging programme of contextual studies and you will take part in gallery and location visits, written assignments and tutorials throughout the course, as well as relevant work experience, employer-led projects, commissions and exhibitions.

HND Games Design For Industry

This skills-based programme meets the requirements of one of the fastest growing, dynamic and entrepreneurial sectors in the creative industries. Providing practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in the game industry in paths such as an animation, level design, 3D modelling or concept art etc. Core artistic and technical skills will be developed to enable creation and building of games and content for a variety of platforms. You will gain an understanding of the broad areas of games development, ludology, VR, concept work, 3D modelling and animation, level creation, character design, motion capture, history, contextual and social issues, together with an overview of the more technical and creative aspects of the games design pipeline. Studies include formal lectures, practical workshops, trips to EGX Rezzed (London) and industry based assignments, exploring numerous aspects of digital gaming within a combined creative and technical framework; real-world tasks; creating real products through competitions, live client briefs and for the college’s own games design company; establishing a strong portfolio; web presence and showreel towards future employment. The experience is relevant and realistic.

BA (Hons) Games Design For Industry

This 1 year top up, full time, innovative and exciting new games programme has been designed to allow students from the HND or foundation degree (and others where appropriate) to progress to an honours degree to develop an independent, autonomous practice, but with skills and attributes to be part of any team within any typical games design studio. This programme aims to facilitate and equip graduates with the expertise, enthusiasm and flexibility for a future in developing games and their content. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of Agile, entrepreneurship, team management and the techniques and skills needed by the games industry to get you that dream job, or to start your own independent games company. We specialise in providing a typical studio set up with small class sizes to ensure you get excellent support and advice for your studies. You will have greater access to staff and resources, as well as practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in your chosen area of specialism within the games industry. Tutors will facilitate your independent research into advanced game design skills and techniques reflecting your particular specialism throughout the programme. Team production of prototypes will be explored, as well as methods to improve immersion, narrative and visual impact. You will be encouraged to investigate design innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, to develop new methods of enhancing gameplay, and simulation whilst receiving career and business advice specifically tailored to your individual aspirations. Visits to games festivals such as EGX Rezzed will also inform student practice. You will be encouraged to work creatively and professionally to design and communicate concepts through visuals, prototypes, 3D/2D game assets, game design documents, pitches and presentations often to professionals within the industry. You will use industry standard software such as Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Maya and Mudbox etc), the full Adobe Master collection, UE4 and others. You will also have access to VR headsets such as Oculus Rifts and Vives, excellent sound labs, video cameras, Kinect cameras and blue/green screens etc. Graduates have gone on to work in games studios such as Splash Damage or set up their own independent studios. This is a full-time course; typically, students should expect to spend 35 – 40 hours per week on a combination of taught and self-directed study. Each module is delivered over a 15-week Study Block, which typically comprises 12 weeks of learning and teaching, and 3 weeks of assessment and feedback. Students will engage in a variety of learning activities, including lectures, seminars, private and group tutorials, specialist workshops.

FdA Photography

Level 5 • Full-time • Arts & Media department


Our exciting and vibrant new FdA Photography programme, is built upon the years of existing good practice to be found in the Arts and Media Department at Cornwall College Camborne. Photography is a popular, challenging and competitive subject. As such our new programme has been designed to ensure our graduates are tenacious, flexible and excited by the new opportunities that are available in photography and are fully aware of the niches that can be carved within the creative industries. To ensure a dynamic student experience, as a FdA Photography student you will be located within the existing BA (Hons)/ FdA Art & Design Practice studio spaces, sharing a range of facilities including an HE Common Room. You will also enjoy your own subject specific teaching areas, including a photography studio and dark room facilities. Smaller teaching groups are a positive element of the programme, ensuring you receive the expert attention that you need to become a successful photographer. However, the programme cohorts will be large enough for you to collaborate with fellow students and undertake group projects. Opportunities will exist to support you if your interest lies in photo-journalism or contemporary fashion, or if you wish to develop specialisms in the use of either digital or conventional photographic technology. Photography specific visits and trips will take part throughout the programme as part of the curriculum. Location photography shoots in Cornwall, in both countryside and coastal regions, will also form part of the programme.
