The VTCT level 4 certificate in Sports Massage Therapy will prepare you for a career as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. The elements that make up the course include detailed subjective and objective assessment to differentially diagnose the injury the client may be suffering from. You will learn advanced massage techniques to prevent and manage injury and different treatment modalities and exercises used to support the rehabilitation process.

Once you have learnt the fundamentals from our industry experienced lecturers you will put theory into practice when we open our sports therapy clinic to members of the public. This will give you the opportunity to expand your experience of working with different injuries to enhance your learning.

This qualification is recognised by the UK’s leading professional body the Sports Massage Association. We set you up to be ready to affiliate with the professional body by supporting you gain 50 hours of professional practice both during your lesson time and working on clients in your own time.

What you will learn

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology to work on post-acute injury and pre excising conditions, dealing with Musculo-skeletal and para-tendon injuries. You will develop the skills to conduct subjective and objective assessments which will cover active, passive and resisted range of movements, detailed postural analysis, functional testing and special tests.

You will also develop skills to work safely and effectively on muscle and para-tendon injuries using a variety of soft tissue techniques and will be able to advise on treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair.

Entry requirements

Learners must hold a level 3 in sports massage.

Work experience

The college has a working clinic that members of the public attend allowing work experience to be gained during lesson time.

Assessment

You will be assessed by workbook completion, practical observations on a minimum of 5 occasions.

Progression

On completion of the level 4 course you will be to broaden your client base and earning potential as a sports massage practitioner on a self-employed basis. You will be able to work in private health clubs and leisure centres. Or why not progress on to our foundation degree in sport, health and fitness.
