Furniture Apprenticeship

A student studying carpentry This course can change your earning potential and your ability to find work anywhere in the world. The question is what do you want to do?

This course will enable you to fit out very high specification interiors in cars, motorhomes, super Yachts, planes or design and fit kitchens, offices, shops or set up your own furniture making business. The course is delivered here at the Camborne campus within the dedicated furniture suite where we have a large maker’s workshop, a design room, a power tool room and a finishing room as well as access to the wood machine/ joinery workshop.

Within the workshops you will have practical access to equipment and staff that will enable you to progress your design to completion. You will have time to learn techniques that you can further develop. We are the only furniture provider in Cornwall and one of only a few furniture apprenticeship courses in the UK.

We expect our learners to work to very high standards and this is reflected in the fact that one of our learners won Gold at the National World skills UK competition and has recently picked up the apprentice of the year for the Cornwall College Group. What you will learn

You will develop your design skills and making skills to another level as you explore the world of curves, initially you will be engaged in producing a complex box and then will soon be engaged in designing a prototype piece of furniture to present to a customer.

You will learn a diverse range of skills from making and designing jigs to operating CNC’s, working as a team and leading a team, looking at a wide range of design influences to enable you to construct complex furniture in the most efficient way possible.

Entry requirements

You will need to have an employer who can provided related experience and have evidence of completing a level 2 in furniture making

Work experience

You will be at work 4 days a week working alongside competent furniture makers

Assessment

You will be assessed variously, by exam, both online and written. You will also be assessed by your tutor through practical tasks. You will also need to maintain a detailed work related diary to use as evidence during your end test

Progression

Once you have completed your level 3, you can walk away and work or look at Higher level qualifications at university in design.
