You will be expected to attend College for two/three days a week and will be required to work to high professional standards. You will train in one of our industry standard salons, work in a realistic environment and use the latest equipment, machinery and products within the industry.

  What You Will Learn

You will get to develop your work based skills, recognising the importance of professional practice.

During the course, you will learn various advanced techniques and skills which are used by beauty therapists. You will gain the confidence and understanding of these techniques so you are prepared for work.

Areas of study include: Body Massage, Hot Stones Massage, Facial Electrotherapy, Body Electrotherapy, Indian Head Massage, Electrolysis and Microdermabrasion. In addition to all of the practical aspects of the course, you will learn salon practice, promotional activity, health and safety and anatomy & physiology for beauty therapists.

Our tutors are industry professionals and they will demonstrate the practical techniques as well as best practice so that you can be sure that you are equipped with the skills and know-how to perform these services independently.

When you are confident enough and have practiced the techniques to a level 3 standard, you will be able to provide services to paying customers.

  Entry Requirements

You will need a Level 2 beauty qualification and a real interest in the beauty industry. You should be enthusiastic to learn a variety of advanced practical skills and the associated knowledge, which will develop your employment opportunities within the beauty therapy industry. As with all therapy professions, you will need to create the right impression with your clients and must therefore be professional, courteous and discreet. Excellent communication skills are essential. This is an intensive, knowledge-based course and we do look for enthusiasm and motivation to succeed on the course.

  Work Experience

You will need to undertake work experience and/or an industry placement as part of your course.

  Assessment

Theory is delivered for each unit and in-house exams are set, however emphasis is placed on practical learning. Paying clients are to be used for practical assessment.

Alongside the theory you will produce a portfolio of your work which will be verified and should include assessment books, projects, and theoretical work

  Progression

Afterwards, you may wish to progress on to the salon management qualification which incorporates light & laser for skin rejuvenation and advanced electrolysis or use your new qualification to gain employment in industry.

Opportunities exist for beauty therapists throughout the UK as well as overseas in holiday resorts, on cruise ships and major airlines. There are good prospects for beauty therapists and you could follow a variety of career paths.

I was very nervous and excited to start college. I was living in Looe and nobody that I knew from my school was going to do the course that I was going to do, so yeah, I had first day feels, but it was great. I made friends really quickly and like everyone says it goes really fast, so enjoy it. I loved my hairdressing course and getting really hands on. Before I started college I spent the summer in a salon, just as an assistant, soaking everything up and watching lots. I also practiced things on my friends and family, even if it was just blow drying. I have very curly hair so I really enjoyed trying new things out on my own hair too. There are so many options with hairdressing, it’s really limitless.

I now have my own salon in South London called Bleach. I also do a lot of freelance work, which I have been doing for about 10 years now working in TV, music videos, touring with musicians and artists on their tours, lots of live TV and photo shoots and things like that. I have also been able to travel, all things I never even imagined I would be able to do, so your possibilities are endless.

If the freelance side of things is what you would like to get into be very well rounded. I think it’s played well for me that I can do everything from cutting, colouring and extensions down to perming and shampoo and sets. When I was at college I was like; “oh another perm!”, but all of those things really shape everything that you end up being able to do. They give you so many skills that you might think at the time you’re not going to need but you really will want them! Practice as much as possible and play around, your friends will get tired of having their hair done.
