College answers demand with expanded counselling training offer
The increasing demand for high-quality counselling training in the region has seen The Cornwall Counselling Institute (CCI) extend its teaching locations to Newquay and Falmouth, as well as launching a brand new FdSc Counselling Psychology with Criminology in Camborne.
The pressures caused by the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis has increased demand for therapy and in turn, a need for professional counsellors.
Since its set up in 2022, the Institute, a part of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), has grown to become a centre of excellence for Counselling and Psychotherapy training, providing one of the largest low-cost Counselling Agencies in the south west, The Penhaligon Counselling Agency.
Due to the increasing popularity of the qualifications on offer, the decision was made to introduce two new NCFE L2 Certificate in Counselling Skills courses at Falmouth Marine School and Newquay University Centre Cornwall College, alongside the existing courses in Camborne and St Austell.
The Institute is also launching a bespoke new Foundation Degree, focusing on a therapeutic and psychological approaches to the field of criminology.
Deborah Williams, Chartered Psychologist and Head of CCI, expressed her excitement for the opportunity to train more counsellors in Cornwall, alleviating the pressures faced by the industry.
She stated: “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in the field of counselling and psychology. Some people may wish to upskill through learning counselling skills and others may want to train to become a fully qualified counsellor.”
“Alongside a range of qualifications, we offer teaching and guidance from professional experts in the field, including BACP-accredited counsellors, Chartered Counselling and Educational Psychologists, plus speciality therapists, including eco therapists, child therapists, and well-being and Life Coaches,” Deborah expressed.
John Evans, the principal and CE of TCCG, emphasised the significance of offering training at the Falmouth and Newquay campuses, describing it as “a crucial step in the right direction, and another example of the way in which The Cornwall College Group is meeting the local and regional need”.
“Following great success at our Camborne and St Austell campuses, it became evident that the demand for trained counsellors was increasing. Extending our programme to train more counsellors in Cornwall is vital for our local communities.”
“By enhancing accessibility to training opportunities across the county, we are able to provide valuable pathways for individuals to pursue a fulfilling career in counselling,” John continued.
The NCFE Counselling Studies at Level 2 will be available at Falmouth Marine School and Newquay University Centre Cornwall College from September 2023 and February 2024, and the FdSc Counselling Psychology with Criminology is currently taking applications for September 2023 start.
