Chance to upskill DIY skills

A wide selection of trade skills can now be learned in 10 week practical courses.

Whether looking to learn a new skill, or currently working in construction and wanting to upskill, these hands-on courses give people the opportunity to learn useful trades in under three months.

Taught by professional trade’s people in safe purpose-built surroundings, all courses take place on Saturday mornings at Cornwall College Camborne, to allow people with jobs or other commitments to attend.

Curriculum Area Manager for Construction, Building Service and Electrical at Cornwall College Camborne, Jon Ninnes, said the Saturday Skills Programme offers “individuals the opportunity to “learn new skills and make mistakes in a controlled and supporting environment”, before putting the skills to use at home or on a project.

“From updating an existing bathroom, through home renovation, to building a new garage, you can learn the skills you need to tackle a range of tasks with confidence,” he added.

Previous Saturday Skills student, Geoff Hodge, said he “really enjoyed it and learnt so much”.

“It was great to be taught by experienced tradesmen and learn tricks of the trade from them. I feel confident now to skim and render to a good standard. I would definitely thoroughly recommend the course.”

Fellow Saturday Skills student, Adam Burt, said it was “a brilliant course”.

“I really enjoyed it and learnt so much more than expected,” he continued.

“It was a good environment and environment to learn in, the teacher was excellent, always offering advice and helping. I would definitely recommend to other and I am very keen to learn other things now. It has given me the confidence to go and try different skills.”

Commencing on Saturday 09th January 2021, DIY enthusiasts, people with projects and those already working in the construction industries, can choose from courses including; plastering, brick & blockwork, plumbing and bench joinery.

Cornwall College is the number one training provider for trade skills in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, according to the CITB.

Courses start from just £300.
