Lecturer brings Cornish mining exodus to life with published work
A lecturer is celebrating after having a piece of work published.
English and Maths Lecturer at Cornwall College Camborne, Ulrike Duran Bravo, has had her creative work published in a collection of pieces, ‘Cornwall: Misfits, Curiosities & Legends’.
The short story is based on a true account of a miner who leaves his native Cornwall to seek a better future mining in South America. It takes the form of a letter to his wife who remained at home.
‘Copper in Abundance’ explores some of the historical details of many tinners who left the Duchy during the decline of the tin mining industry in the late 1800s.
“The character came about after a visit to Gyllydune Gardens in Falmouth,” Ulrike explained.
“One of the previous owners, Samson Waters, returned after making his fortune in Chile. As I am half-Chilean, but live in Cornwall, this grabbed my interest.”
Lead Lecturer for English & Maths at Cornwall College Camborne, Mark Beckett, said as “The Career College, we are proud of our professional writers and authors in our English department who publish work as well as teach practical writing skills to students.”
“Ulrike’s creative writing skills make her best placed for supporting students with their English Language qualifications.”
Author of ‘Lost Cornwall’ and fellow lecturer at Cornwall College Camborne, Joanna Thomas, said it is a “delightful tale full of historical details which brings the protagonist’s journey overseas to life”.
“Ulrike has researched extensively and her descriptions of life In Chile are evocative and visual,” Joanna continued.
“It is an important part of our heritage and culture here in Cornwall, that so many miners bravely left families behind, to seek a better livelihood abroad. I found Ulrike’s story particularly poignant and its powerful sense of place made a foreign place accessible.”
The English department at Cornwall College Camborne offers learners a chance to revisit their GCSEs post 16, but also offers adults the opportunity to build on their English with Functional Skills qualifications and evening classes.
The College boasts industry-standard training facilities including hair and beauty salons, a state-of-the-art training kitchen, and a construction skills training centre provide the local community with all the experiences and skills necessary for excelling in their careers.
