Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. With access to animal collections on campus you will gain the practical training you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry.

We offer three options for you to start your studies in the animal management industry depending on your GCSE results. Our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal should your GCSEs not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 2 or Level 3.

This full-time course is available at all three of our land-based colleges, which are home to a large variety of animals including: bearded dragons, snakes, pigs, tortoises, rats, rabbits, donkeys, poultry and cattle, allowing you to gain hands-on experience throughout the course.

Ideal if:

You have a keen interest in working with animals and want to pursue a career within animal management or related industries.

You’ll need:

A grade C/4 in either maths or English and three additional GCSEs at grade D/3 or above.

You will be required to attend an interview where you will be asked to show commitment to working with animals, plus provide a reference from your school tutor or other professional person.

Students who have undertaken a Level 1 course in Animal Care may apply.

You’ll learn:

During this one-year course you will learn more about animal health and welfare, farm livestock, animal behaviour and handling, animal housing and feeding, animal biology, animal nursing, breeds, grooming and wildlife. You will also undertake a work experience placement. Theoretical lessons are backed up with practical hands-on sessions within our extensive animal units.

This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and experience of working with and caring for a range of animals with which you will have practical experience at our Animal Units on each Duchy College site.

To study through theory and practical work spending some time at college and in a work experience placement of your choice.

PROFILE

Faye Archell Programme Manager - Animal Management

Faye spent some time working as an aquarist at Southend Sea Life Centre after gaining a degree in Wildlife Management before starting teaching in 2002. She has worked with cetaceans and marine turtles at a rehabilitation centre in Florida and Rhesus and Bonnet Macaques rescued from the pet trade in Goa. Faye is also a wildlife officer with the charity ORCA and regularly carries out marine mammal surveys on ferry and cruise line routes.
