This full-time course is available at all three of our land-based colleges, which are home to a large variety of animals including: bearded dragons, snakes, pigs, tortoises, rats, rabbits, donkeys, poultry and cattle, allowing you to gain hands-on experience throughout the course.

You have a keen interest in working with animals.
A grade C or 4 in either maths or English and science, or equivalent, and three additional GCSEs at grade D or above. You will be required to attend an interview where you will be asked to show commitment to working with animals, plus provide a reference from your school tutor or other professional person. Students who have undertaken a Level 1 course in Animal Care may apply.
About animal health and welfare, an introduction to animal behaviour and handling, animal housing and feeding, an introduction to animal biology, about farm livestock and work-related experience in the land-based sector.
This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and experience of working with and caring for a range of animals with which you will have practical experience at our Animal Units on each Duchy College site. You will study through theory and practical work spending some time at College and in a work experience placement of your choice.

The opportunity to go on field trips to local zoos, wildlife parks and animal sanctuaries.
To work in animal management or progress to further study on our Animal Management City & Guilds Level 3 or an Animal Management Apprenticeship.
Jo Challacombe Technician - Animal Management
Jo manages the care of a wide range of animals at Duchy College's Stoke Climsland animal care unit and supports students on further and higher education programmes, to give them the best hands-on learning experience. Jo originally trained in equitation science before broadening her experience into understanding the needs and behaviours of a range of animals from rats and snakes to centipedes and rabbits!
