Students raise incredible 6.5K for Poppy Appeal

Student fundraisers from Duchy College have gone the extra mile, raising over £6,000 for this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Military & Protective Services students from the College’s Stoke Climsland campus, showed their support by taking part in a sponsored run, raising £6,651 for the My Poppy Run appeal.

“The atmosphere was so positive,” said student Kofi Bruce who completed the full 10 mile run.

“It’s such a good cause and covid has certainly impacted the opportunities to fundraise, so we wanted to raise as much as we could. The vast majority of people ran further than they had planned because everyone had so much energy and wanted to do well for the team.”

The students and teaching staff taking part, chose to run either two, four, six, eight or 10 miles to raise money. Despite a gruelling route around the hilly campus and some adverse weather conditions, the entrants were not deterred.

Student Chloe Franchet ended up running further than she planned.

“At the start of the race the weather was so bad, I had planned to run four miles. In the end, the atmosphere and my team made me want to keep going and I completed six miles,” Chloe explained.

Fellow student Nancy Fentiman, who also completed six miles, felt the same sense of achievement.

Nancy said: “I really enjoyed working as part of a team helping each other out to get through to the end.”

The Military & Protective Services Academy at Duchy College provides a unique gateway for those passionate about a career in the Armed Forces or Emergency Services. For many of the students and the teaching staff, the Poppy Appeal is a cause that is close to their hearts.

“My Dad is in the Royal Navy, that made me want to run,” said student Emily Cane who ran six miles to help the cause.

“The end of the race was the best bit. It gave me such a sense of personal achievement and then as a team cheering everyone else across the finish line.”
