Soil Map of Cornwall Unveiled
A comprehensive soil map of the Lizard in Cornwall has been unveiled at the Cornwall College University Centre, based at the Eden Project, in a ceremony honouring the late soil scientist, Steve Staines.
The map represents the first and only extensive soil study of Cornwall, testament to Steve’s dedication and expertise in the field.
The University Centre will display the soil map along with a personal tribute to the pioneering scientist who dedicated his life to study local minerals, to understand and promote conservation and biodiversity initiatives for generations to come.
Dr Jennie Jordan, head of the Eden Project-based campus, said: “We’re incredibly honoured to display Steve’s remarkable map, presented to us by his grandchildren.”
“Working in the 1970s to produce the most comprehensive soil map of Cornwall, Steve’s work remains a keystone study for land managers, ecologists, conservationists and planners to this day. This map will take centre-stage at Growing Point and will inspire our students and the wider community who visit our state-of-the-art laboratories for years to come,” Jennie added.
Steve Staines’s friends and family expressed deep gratitude to the University Centre, who will continue his work and legacy.
The event was organised by Tim Harrod, a fellow soil scientist who worked closely with Steve.
