Basement business boost for personal trainers

Two former students from a local college are celebrating after successfully launching a new personal training business.

Jen Franks and Amber Keetch who previously studied the Level 3 Personal Trainer course at Cornwall College Camborne have now set up a successful, growing personal trainer and gym business in Truro.

“I started to build Basement Personal Training in January just as I began my personal trainer qualification at Cornwall College Camborne,” Jen explained.

“Unfortunately lockdown closed the gym before I could even open it, timing has never been my strong point, but I continued to make sure everything was ready for when we were able to open.”

Jen said she felt gyms were sometimes scary places for a lot of people.

“I wanted to find a way of helping them feel more comfortable with using the equipment, and more confident in themselves,” she continued.

“I have enjoyed focusing on helping people with their mental health through exercise and I will continue to do so. I asked Amber to join as an employed personal trainer to work alongside me in the personal trainer gym, it’s been going so well we decided to partner up under the basement brand and create Basement Fitness together.

“The idea behind both gyms is to help create a fitness community between fitness instructors and personal trainers, working together instead of against each other, and to provide jobs during these difficult times.”

Jen said she loved the personal trainer course at Cornwall College Camborne and was pushed to do their best every day.

“The tutor was amazing and the content of the course gave me the building blocks I needed to start Basement Personal Training and Basement Fitness,” she added.

Curriculum Area Manager for Sport at Cornwall College Camborne, Louise Fletcher, said whilst studying at the College “Jenny and Amber were both studious individuals”.

“They spent a lot of time on their personal pursuits of achieving their Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification,” she continued.

“The team here at Cornwall College Camborne are highly motivated, supportive and passionate about seeing our learners succeed.

“We know that it can be overwhelming to start up and develop your own Personal Training business so to see the success that Jenny and Amber have been making is exceptional.”
