Three students from Falmouth Marine School have secured full time jobs, after just a few weeks of work experience with one Cornish business.  Jay Gentle, Tom Bogawski and Joe De Barros completed their work experience with Sailtech in Falmouth alongside their Yacht Fit Out and Composites course.

Sailtech Manager Pete Crockford, said:  “I work very closely with Falmouth Marine School and have always supported the boatbuilding in any way I can.  My personal boat needed some attention and I thought this would provide a good opportunity for a couple of the students to develop their skills.  I was so impressed by the professionalism, work ethic and skills of the three students that I offered them paid employment under my supervision.”

Falmouth Marine School offers a range of boat building course, all of which give students the opportunity to take part in projects on various scales and using a range of materials.  In the last 12 months the students have built a replica Viking ship and a prototype racing boat, amongst dozens of other live projects.

Student Jay Gentle, commented:  “I am thrilled to be able to work in my chosen field alongside my course.  Sailtech is a great place to work and Falmouth Marine School is a great place to study.  The staff are experts in boatbuilding and we are always provided with live industry projects which not only develop our skills, but it’s great to list on our C.V and we meet professionals working in the industry that could potentially become our employer; this job proves that.”

Boatbuilding Programme Manager at Falmouth Marine School, Jonny Mills, added:  “There has never been a better time to study boatbuilding.  There is a skills gap in the industry, business are expanding and there is a shortfall of qualified boat builders.  We work with a multitude of employers on live projects and work experience placements.  This provides the students with first class experience in the industry which is proving to lead directly to employment.”
