A local student is celebrating his new role in a Michelin Star restaurant.

Level 3 Professional Cookery student at Cornwall College Saltash, Charlie Walters, is the new Commis Chef at The Elephant Restaurant & Brasserie in Torquay.

The former Liskeard Community College student, Charlie, 17, said he was “thrilled about the new role”.

“I went to the food festival in Padstow with College where I met head chef, Simon Hulston, and he offered me some work experience,” he continued.

“It was following the work experience that I was interviewed for the position and got the job. I am working full time, but coming into College one day a week to complete my course, which I finish next month.”

Charlie was at The Major Series International Final in London when he got the call saying he had the job.

“It’s just been an amazing few months,” he said.

“I was living at home with my parents in Looe, and have recently moved to Torquay. I feel I have learnt so much the last few weeks.”

Charlie said he hoped to progress through other roles over the next five years.

“I would really recommend the Professional Cookery course at Cornwall College Saltash to others,” he continued.

“Without the fundamental skills I have learnt at College, I wouldn’t be where I am now. The lecturers are fantastic. Even down to them being strict about our Chef’s uniform they teach us to have pride in our appearance which definitely helped get the job.”

Team Lead for Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said it was “fantastic to see what Charlie has achieved”.

“He has been completely dedicated throughout the whole of his course and he really deserves this success. He clearly has a bright future ahead of him,” he explained.

“Charlie’s success highlights why Cornwall College really is the best catering college in the South West.”
