Bicton College has received a fleet of new JCB equipment to the site which will provide the latest modern technology for Bicton’s students to learn from.
With the help of ESIF grant funding awarded by the Heart of the South West LEP after a successful Growth Deal bid, Bicton College has just taken delivery of a new fleet of state of the art Holt JCB machinery. As a leading land-based College, Bicton is always looking for ways to develop their teaching practises and enhance learner experience and this welcome addition now provides students with industry relevant hands on technical experience required on sites and in the workplace.
Connor Edwards, a former student now part of the teaching team at Bicton, explained why he was so excited about the new equipment: ‘JCB have provided us with modern, up to date machines complete with the latest technology and safety systems – including features like GPS tracking.’
These machines will be used at Bicton to train young people, adults and apprentices how to operate them to a very high industry standard – so that they possess the skills required in the industry. Bicton College have invested in these machines and as such invested in their teaching facilities as well as their ability to do groundworks – of which there is an increasing demand for in the South West.
Phil Le Grice, Bicton’s Principal, emphasised that their ethos is to focus on the local, and explained that these locally sourced machines from Holt JCB will be used to train local people to do jobs within the local community reflecting the relevant industry needs. This is increasingly relevant as we are facing a shortage of construction drivers in the South West with projects like Hinkley Point on the horizon where this demand will increase.
Phil commented: ‘We are incredibly grateful to Holt JCB, who not only responded to our tender with a fantastic deal of five great quality machines, but who have also gone the extra mile and have sponsored one of the vehicles as well as providing us with JCB clothing and accessories. It is great to see such a well-respected brand in the industry invest resources in their future employees.’
Staff and students are extremely excited to have these fantastic new resources on site at Bicton. For more information on the range of Construction and Plant Operations courses available across The Cornwall College Group visit www.bicton.ac.uk or call 0845 60 50 455.
