A group of local students are celebrating after successfully completing the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge.
The Jubilee Challenge, a version of the Ten Tors, is a trekking expedition on northern Dartmoor designed specifically for young people with special needs, both physical and educational.
There are four different routes ranging from seven to 15 miles for entrants to trek and navigate across the moor to specified checkpoints and share the same pressure, achievements and weather as those completing the Ten Tors.
Foundation Learning students from Duchy College took on the moor and its testing conditions to complete nine, 11 and 15 mile walks.
Student, Ben King, said he has “really enjoyed” taking part in the Jubilee Challenge and walking as part of the team.
“I feel very proud to have taken part,” he added.
Foundation Learner Lecturer at Duchy College, Emma Thompson, said the event went “really well” and all the students who participated were “exceptionally behaved and achieved a lot”.
“They worked well as a team and it gave them an opportunity to achieve something they wouldn’t normally have the chance to do. I couldn’t have been more proud of all the students,” she added.
Team Lead for Foundation Learning, Vicky Challoner, said the event is “always very humbling, and it is an emotional moment to see our learners cross the finishing line”.
“I’d like to congratulate them on their terrific achievement,” she continued.
“Their success bears testament to the amazing teaching staff and support staff that gave up their free time to train, camp and walk with the learners.”
The Foundation Learning courses at Duchy College are designed for students with moderate learning or behavioural difficulties. It enables students to learn and gain nationally recognised qualifications in their chosen area of study at entry-level and Level 1.
There are four land-based areas to choose from; horticulture, animal care, agriculture and horse care. Students also work on personal and social development, preparation for work and independent living skills.
