Praise for “high quality” of college’s dyslexia provision

Dyslexic learners in Cornwall and Devon have access to fantastic, high-quality dyslexia-friendly provision, according to the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).

The remarks were made as the BDA awarded The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) the BDA Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark Award for Colleges.

TCCG is the only further education college in the South West to be awarded The Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark after an assessment of its policies, teaching and inclusiveness.

Joanne Gregory Quality Mark Development Manager BDA said “all members of staff involved in the achievement are to be congratulated on their hard work in developing and achieving a high standard of dyslexia friendly provision throughout the college”.

“The commitment and dedication that has been given to this initiative has been clearly demonstrated,” she continued.

“In particular, David Price, Learning Support Manager and Laura Coggon, SEND Support Officer, and the dedicated team of support staff across the college are to be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to ensuring a positive outcome for the college throughout the re-verification process.”

Joanne also wanted to express her appreciation to the members of staff selected for classroom observations and interviews “for the excellent practices that were observed”.

“The knowledge and understanding of dyslexia friendly practice demonstrated by these individuals is to be applauded,” she said.


Acting CEO and Principal of TCCG Raoul Humphreys welcomed the BDA’s praise for the Group’s commitment to ensuring learners had every opportunity to succeed.

“Being an inclusive and quality education provider is at the core of what we offer people across the region,” he continued.

“Dyslexia affects around 10% of the population, which highlights how vital it is to provide the very best skills and equipment necessary to ensure there are no barriers to a superb education for this large proportion of society. It’s therefore fantastic to see our hard work continuing to pay off, resulting in the acknowledgment from the BDA that we have a high standard of excellent practices in place. I know that staff across the group are rightfully proud of the fact we can guarantee students, whether dyslexic or not, a leading and high quality learning experience.”

Learning Support Manager, David Price, said he was “absolutely delighted” that the work of tutors and the support learners receive had been recognised.

“It’s a great honour,” he continued, “as a team we aim to remove any barriers to learning whilst ensuring everyone is informed about dyslexia and that the right level of support is in place”.

The inspection lasted for two days, with a member of the BDA visiting TCCG’s campuses, speaking to staff and students and observing a number of lessons, as well as measuring the college against five key principles; effectiveness of management, identification of dyslexia, effectiveness of resources, CPD and partnerships with parents/carers and external partners.

The BDA looks to ensure that all students that have been diagnosed with dyslexia are taught in mainstream classrooms, but appropriate teaching methods are used and all environments are dyslexia-friendly.

SEND Support Officer, Laura Coggon, added: “We work with our teaching teams to ensure they are confident in supporting our learners with dyslexia and simple changes like the colour of board markers can make a real difference.”

David Price and Laura Coggon were praised for their work.
