A group of local students have been put through their paces by the Royal Navy.

The Armed Forces careers officers from the Royal Navy put Military Academy students from Duchy College through the Royal Navy recruit test.

This is an exam style test which is split into four elements including 9 minutes for a thirty question spatial reasoning test, nine minutes for a 30 question verbal comprehension test, 16 minutes for a 30 question mathematical comprehension test and 10 minutes for a 30 question mechanical reasoning test.

When this test is marked it does, depending on individual results, give the applicant a list of job roles they are eligible to do.

Student, Matt Mitchell, said he did “much better than I thought I would”.

“With the insight we have into the Royal Navy on this course, it has made me realise what I’m capable of,” he added.

Curriculum Lead for Military Academy and Public Services at Duchy College, Jamie Crisp, said the engagement the students are having with the Royal Navy “has been brilliant”.

“Seeing the learners being tested on the Royal Navy Recruit test and having forty learners achieve the grades required for the specific jobs they want to pursue in the future demonstrates the continuing curriculum focus of being a career led college,” Jamie explained.

“This has been reinforced last month with Rhys Hewett leaving the Military Academy to join phase 1 training at HMS Raleigh.”

Student, Rhys Hewitt, from Liskeard, said the “academic and vocational skills I learnt at college plus the monthly visits to HMS Raleigh really helped me to fast track my application for the Royal Navy and gain a January start date at HMS Raleigh.”

There is a Courses and Careers Advice Event on Saturday 24th March, 10am until Midday, for students who may be interested in sport to come along and meet the teams and explore the facilities.
