The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has officially approved a new four-day engine course in Cornwall.

The Approved Engine Course (AEC) is the first level qualification for the MCA Engineering Officer training scheme and can be taken at Falmouth marine School.

It is seen as the first step on the engineering ladder for those with no formal marine engineering experience and is an ideal introduction for those who wish to improve and enhance their employment prospects in various aspects of the marine industry.

The four-day course (30 hours) provides the practical basic hands-on training and theoretical knowledge of engines and associated systems.

Further to the job opportunities, the course provides an invaluable skills base for those planning to skipper smaller yachts, according to Course Manager Alex Elsdon.

“We are delighted to have been awarded the MCA accreditation. It’s a great addition for our Marine Engineering students and indeed the local industry,” he said.

“The MCA course is not compulsory to become a marine engineer continues Alex, however it is advised for a career in marine engineering. It enables you to work on board yachts as an engineer, and must be updated every five years in order to work off-shore.”

The first group currently completing the programme are the Marine Engineering students and Apprentices. Full time Marine Engineering student Catherine Burrin, 22 from Falmouth said: “This course is great for C.V boosting. I have already secured six months employment in Greece when I finish my course, but this training and certificate enhances what I’ve already got and will open more doors when I need them.”

Catherine isn’t the only one that sees the benefit in having the qualification, according to Jammer Phillips, 18, from Helston.

“I would like to work on superyachts so this combined with my City & Guides will hopefully land me a great first role as a marine engineer,” he explained.

More courses will be run in April, May and July. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on the date of certification and have a sound knowledge of English and a general understanding in some area of engineering.
