A group of students are trying to shed light on the various pathways into the sports industry by hosting careers events.

Students on the BSc (Hons) Sport, Health and Exercise Science course invited students and sports businesses from across the county to a careers fair at Cornwall College Camborne.

Jessica Lee, a student on the BSc (Hons) Sport, Health and Exercise Science course, who helped to set up the event, said the aim was to “to show pathways in to the sports industry that people haven’t thought about”.

“We want students in the county thinking about life after their qualification and what will be available to them,” she continued.

“We are hoping to break the barriers down by showing a range of careers. We have people from the College, including career specialists and sports makers, to show the facilities and support available to them through the College. All the exhibitors can talk about their routes into the sport industry to help to help make their choices.”

Jessica, who did a personal training course last year after attending a careers fair said it helped her to make the decision on her next step.

“I’m hoping to provide that help to the students today and in the future I would like to set up a mobile gym and bring fitness to people as a health and fitness outreach.”

Kyra Bull, a nineteen-year-old former student of Pool Academy, who came to the event, said she attended to “get a better idea of what I want to do in the future”.

“Currently I’m hoping to run my own exercise to music business in the future and this event has helped me to confirm the idea I have already,” she added.

Lecturer on the BSc (Hons) Sport, Health and Exercise Science, Philip Toy, said: “This experience has been great for the students to gain the soft skills alongside the academic. The students had to find, contact and invite all the exhibitors here today as well as arranging all the logistics of the event.”

Jessica would like to thank all the exhibitors and also Wood Fired Pizza who provided food for the event.
