Another hugely successful year for the Access courses across The Cornwall College Group sees a new group of students fulfil their dreams of a university education.  The one-year course is  designed as a stepping stone for adults aged over 19 looking to progress on to higher education, but who may be lacking the right qualifications or who are looking to change or develop their career.

Director of Science and Natural Environment across The Cornwall College Group, Dr Mark Nason, said: “It has been another tremendous year for students on Access courses across the group and I am delighted that we have helped them towards their dream of studying towards a degree.

“I would recommend access to anyone who is thinking of a change of direction, a route to your dream career or just wanting to give education another go. The key is always the belief that these courses can really make a difference, but only if you take the first step and enrol.”

Cornwall College provides Access courses in science, art, computing, agriculture, engineering, nursing, health and social care, social work, sport and social science.  It also offers a year-long pre-Access course for those adults who are not quite ready yet for the access programme.

Former student Scott Gregor is now preparing to study a Mining Engineering at the world renowned Camborne School of Mines, he said: “I would encourage anyone who is in work or has been out of education for a time and wishes to progress into further advanced education to take an Access course as it has the flexibility, maturity and educational standard to match and exceed A-Levels.

“To me an Access course will give you a solid foundation to progress onto University with more added extras that other courses cannot match. Such as coursework structuring tailored to course specific criterion and the flexibility to work while you study. An Access course in my view is the most accessible course in further education for people who aim of progressing to university.”

With recent government changes to funding for learners aged 24 and over, going back to study at Level 3 and above has never been easier. For the first time, 24+ advanced learning loans will give students in further education access to financial support for tuition costs, similar to that which is available in higher education. There is also a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments.

Scott continued: “One of the best bits about the Access course is the ‘live’ and ‘continuous’ feedback that the tutors give you during the course; it is second to none.  I also liked the encouragement given by the tutors to allow discussions about current affairs and how they relate to the subjects you are studying.”

The Cornwall College Group offers Access courses from Cornwall College sites at Camborne, St Austell, Saltash and Newquay as well as Duchy College Stoke Climsland, Falmouth Marine School and Bicton College.  Also this is the first time that students will be able to study an access to science course at the world famous Eden Project.

Dr Nason added: “I would like to say a personal thank you and good luck to Scott and all of the other students as they prepare for life at University! The power of these courses to change lives is incredible.

“So often our teams come across students who have been told in the past that they cannot achieve or that they are just not good enough and they stay in that mind-set. Access gives these people the confidence, knowledge and skills to put this negativity behind them and achieve great things.”

A dedicated hotline is open, manned by the College’s specialist staff on 0845 22 32 567.  Further details are available at www.cornwall.ac.uk/university.
