Students from Duchy College Stoke Climsland have returned triumphant after successfully completing the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge on Dartmoor last weekend, despite variable weather conditions.
Donning their hiking boots and waterproofs, just after 7.30am on the Saturday the challenge began as the students took on the moor and it’s testing conditions to receive either their bronze, silver or gold awards
The Jubilee Challenge, a shorter version of the Ten Tors, is a trekking expedition on northern Dartmoor designed specifically for young people with special needs, both physical and educational
There are four different routes ranging from seven to 15 miles for entrants to trek and navigate across the moor to specified checkpoints and share the same pressure, achievements and weather as those completing the Ten Tors.
Skills for Working Life Certificate Entry 3 Horticulture student, Sam Crossley-Osbourne, completed the JC4 route and got a gold medal.
“It was important that I did lots of training to get my body and legs strong enough, so I did lots of training with my teacher. I enjoyed seeing the ponies, sheep and cows during the walk,” Sam said.
Transition Officer at Duchy College, Tim Moss, thought this year’s event “was the best one I have been involved in so far.”
“The weather for walking was perfect. All of the learners really enjoyed themselves and all of their parents were really proud of their achievements, so much that they would like their young people to do it again next year. We are really pleased with our learners and how much they all gained from taking part in this event, it allows them to grow in so many ways
The Pathfinder course at Duchy College is designed for students with moderate learning difficulties. It enables students to learn and gain nationally recognised qualifications in their chosen area of study at entry-level and level 1. There are four land-based areas to choose from: horticulture, animal care, agriculture and horse care. Students also work on personal and social development, preparation for work and independent living skills. Maths, English and ICT are also important parts of the course
Team Lead for Foundation Learning, Vicky Challoner, said the event “is always very humbling, and it is an emotional moment to see our learners cross the finishing line.”
“I’d like to congratulate them on their terrific achievement. Their success bears testament to the amazing teaching staff, support staff, and mainstream students that give up their free time to train, camp and walk with the learners.”
