A Cornish rider and her horse, Aurora, were handed victory at the national Horse of the Year show in Birmingham.

Ellie Simmonds and her six-year-old mare, ‘Hevans Forever In My Life’, Aurora’s show name, won the SEIB Search for a Star in the Riding Horse category before standing for reserve champion.

There were ten entrants in Aurora’s class and Ellie explained that they were called randomly to walk, trot and canter round before repeating on the alternate rein.

“The judge rode her and did her confirmation then we were lined up and we won the riding horse title,” she continued.

This then qualified them for the Championship on the Friday where they had to do a show, six horses qualified for this and Aurora went on to win reserve champion.

“It’s been such a fantastic experience, I had a lovely time,” The Cornwall College nail technician lecturer said.

“A lot of work and preparation has gone into getting Aurora this far and I’m so grateful to have help and support from my family – especially my mum.

Aurora will enjoy her winter off now and she’ll be back training in January to get her ready for the year ahead of competitions.”

Going forward she has a good few years ahead of shows and competitions then they would like her to have some foals, according to Ellie.

“Aurora is my once in a lifetime horse and she’ll be with me forever,” she added.
