From producing and staring in a Jeremy Kyle style programme to designing transforming robots out of cardboard, two very different faculties arranged some serious fun and hands on activities, as Cornwall College welcomed their new cohorts.

To help the students settle into a Further Education environment, a packed programme of practical workshops and ice-breakers were planned, giving them the opportunity to make new friends and explore the campuses.

Two popular and award winning courses at Cornwall College; Media and Games Design really embraced the spirit of “Programme Week” and immediately got the students to design, create, build, edit and showcase both short films and transforming robots and all in a matter of days.

Rory Mason, Team Lead for Media, Cornwall College said, “Our Programme Week is all about showcasing what the students will be doing during their time with us, albeit in much less detail.  It gives everyone the chance to try out new things, mix with their peers and helps reduce any issues that they may have had about the courses.

“Media and Games Design are both growing areas and we have gained a fantastic reputation for our award winning courses in both local and national competitions.  Our success rate is second to none and some of our students have really gone onto great things including working on Poldark, Star Wars, America’s Got Talent”.

The creative economy added new jobs at more than twice the UK economy average in 2016, taking the total number of jobs in this sector to 1.9 million and in 2015 the UK games industry was worth a staggering £4.2 billion. Taking advantage of these opportunities, Cornwall College was the first college in Cornwall to introduce Games Design from Level 2 up to BSc (Hons) degree level, offering students the opportunity to study this subject without having to leave Cornwall.

Stephen Howard, Tutor, Games Design, Cornwall College added, “I believe that no one can be more passionate about games design than us. We really understand what’s happening in industry, embrace new technologies into the courses, get our students using industry standard software and we’re pioneers in developing our course provision for the benefit of the students, resulting in students getting exceptional roles at leading games design companies”.
