A former student from Duchy College is celebrating after releasing her first novel.

Vikki Patis, who previously studied the Foundation Degree in Policing at Duchy College Stoke Climsland before progressing onto a BSc Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies Top-up at Plymouth University, first book is called “The Diary”.

“Since the course at Duchy College was so varied, I feel it taught me a number of important transferable skills,” Vikki explained.

“I’ve always loved writing, which transferred to academic writing. My final year dissertation was published by Lambert Publishing in 2016, a couple of years after I graduated.”

“Although I haven’t gone into a career that has an obvious link to my degree, my ability to read and understand legislation helped me get onto my current path as a Regulatory Affairs Manager for a medical device manufacturer,” Vikki continues.

“Writing has always been a passion of mine. I used to take exercise books from school and fill them up with stories.

“It has always been cathartic for me. I use it to deal with various experiences and emotions, hashing things out through my characters. Last year, after a particularly traumatic experience, I turned to writing to help, and smashed out what would become “The Diary” over the course of two months.”

Vikki who is hoping to turn her hand to crime thrillers has already written her second novel, which is due out in March.

“My advice to anyone would be to keep going,” she explained.

“Whatever you want to do, make sure you enjoy the experience. Any experience, whether positive or negative, gets stored for use in my writing. Everything in life is an experience, and an opportunity. It’s easy to get lost along the way, but it usually works out in the end.”
