Former Childcare student at Duchy College, Michelle Lavis, has landed her dream job as a Teaching Assistant at Braddock School.  Michelle completed her work experience at the primary school near Liskeard whilst studying the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, but she has now become a full time member of staff.

Former student, Michelle, said: “My time at Duchy College taught me a lot, inside and outside of my course, it taught me what was important to be a Teaching Assistant and how to get there. The lecturers at Duchy College and also the teachers on my placement gave me a lot of support and motivation. I would definitely recommend the course to others who are interested in working with children.”

Michelle continued: “I had been a student at Braddock school for almost 3 years and to get a job as a Teaching Assistant was a dream. I felt so connected with the staff members and also the children there already and I was not ready to let it go, when a job was advertised I was ready to make it mine, I was determined to finally be a staff member!”

Head of Braddock School, Holly Bridges, said: “Michelle’s training with Duchy College supported her well whilst on her student placement here at Braddock. The combination of the support from Duchy together with on-the-job training stood her in good stead when she applied for her first teaching assistant post she was by far the most prepared and professional of all the candidates at interview and has become a valued member of our school team.”

Team Lead for Children, Schools and Families at Duchy College, Laetitia Mayne, said: “Michelle worked really hard to build a solid relationship with the placement that she was attending as part of her course. The support we receive from a wide range of settings across Devon and Cornwall is invaluable to us in providing real life experiences for all of our full and part time students.”

Laetitia summarised: “Our full and part time courses offer the best mix of practical and theoretical delivery from a team of staff that are 100% sector appropriately qualified and have all worked extensively in this area before coming into teaching. This allows the learners to gain knowledge in the classroom, then apply this in the setting on a week by week basis leading to increased awareness of current issues and the implications of this when being a member of an ever changing sector.”
