An annual Industry Week has given Cornish catering students plenty of food for thought, as they contemplated the different career paths available for them after completing their qualifications.

Over 15 professional catering and hospitality guests gave demos or workshop sessions at Cornwall College St Austell, heralding from companies such as St Austell Brewery, Carlyon Bay hotel, Cornish Coffee and Lobbs Butchery.

Enthusiastic students chose from a multitude of sessions over three days, in which they discovered more about the different career paths available to them after college; from working with coffee or crabs to baking or beer making.

Student Chef, Andrew Holloway who is about to complete his final year at College, said this year’s Industry Week was the best one yet.

“We welcomed many more speakers and chefs to the college and got to take part in more sessions which gave us a fantastic overview of the catering and hospitality industry,” he said.

“We even had a dessert demo from my own brother who used to be a student here at the college a few years back, so it was great to catch up with him and see him in his element.”

Andrews’s brother Alan is currently a pastry chef at Hotel Endsleigh and last year was awarded the Pastry Annual Award of Excellence by the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts.

Team Lead, Steve Rudd said he could feel the “rooms come alive with enthusiasm of the demonstrators and students”.

“This year the event was much more diverse and the feedback from all that took part was really positive with most asking to come back for 2019,” he continued.

“The visiting chefs and guest speakers were really impressed with our own students and said how engaged, fun and what a pleasure they were to work with.”
