Students from Duchy College have travelled to the Amendoeira Golf Resort in Portugal for their annual winter training programme. Whilst there the students who are studying on the Tournament Golf course competed in international competitions, putting into practice their training and knowledge.
Megan Giles competed in the Portuguese Intercollegiate Open and was sitting in 3rd place until the final day and eventually finished in 17th position. The three day event was played over 54 holes with a strong field representing 14 different countries.
Lee Kingdom and Alex Manuel were invited to play in the Algarve Pro Tour, alongside a large field of tour professional golfers. The event was held over 2 days at the stunning Palmares Beach and Golf Resort in Lagos.
Student, Lee Kingdom, said: “The trip was an amazing opportunity to get away from the British weather and practice at a top class facility. The tournament we played in was great and we had the opportunity to play with professional golfers. Having to deal with the pressure of standing at the first tee with the pros next to me was a daunting experience but really unique.”
Team Lead for Sport at Duchy College, Darren Evans, said: “Megan played exceptionally well and was so close to the lead for most of the competition. Both Alex and Lee were dropped in at the deep end with an extremely competitive group of professional golfers. This competition gave them the opportunity to stand side by side with players that are making a living from the game and they did themselves and the college proud. The week was a great success and the ’learning outside of the classroom’ element of the programme was certainly achieved. “
Aside from the competitions, the week gave the students a chance to train in the warm weather and to use the 5 star facilities that the Tournament Golf College degree students use during the winter months. The students also had the opportunity to play floodlit golf on one of the best par three courses available.
The Tournament Golf College Development Programme combines a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport with golf tuition and match play. The course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and students study a range of topics such as Sports Nutrition, Performance Analysis, Psychology and Sports Injuries.
