Dream job in the sun for Cornish student

Published: March 29, 2017

It’s off to France for a Cornish student this summer, after he landed himself a dream job at a popular industry event.

Tom Tripconey, 18 from Helston, will be teaching watersports on the continent for school trip and student travel specialist Voyager.

Grateful Tom, who will be supporting the sailing, windsurfing, coasteering and snorkelling sessions for the company, secured his job at Falmouth Marine Schools Industry Day, held every year in December.

The Level 3 Watersports course student said Industry Day “is fantastic, you get to meet employers in the industry and can apply for jobs on the day”.

Tom left school, like so many young people, unsure about the career he wanted.
He began on an agricultural engineering apprenticeship before switching to a fabrication and welding apprenticeship.

“I did enjoy my apprenticeship, but I couldn’t see myself working in either industry for the rest of my career,” he continued.

“My second apprenticeship fell through so I took some time thinking about what I really wanted to do. I have always enjoyed watersports and when I discovered that I could do a course in it and that there was a demand for instructors, I couldn’t wait to sign up.

“The Watersports course at Falmouth Marine School gets you straight into employment, which many other colleges and courses don’t offer. The lecturers are all still working in the industry alongside tutoring us, so you get first class coaching and access to their experience and industry links.”

Tom is not the only person that has secured employment at the college’s Industry Day.

Falmouth Marine School’s Watersports Lecturer, Hannah Mason, who previously studied at the college said “every year our students have secured employment at this event”.

“Ten years ago I attended Industry Day as a student and secured my first job teaching watersports abroad in Greece,” she said.

“Since then I have worked in many different centres both in the UK and abroad and now I can impart my experience to the students.”
