A Devon student has landed her dream job, which combines her love of the military and animals.

Nineteen-year-old Helen Fewings from Dawlish, Devon, has just landed a job as an Army dog handler.

“I feel very lucky to have been offered my dream job working with animals in the military, especially when the competition was so high!” Helen revealed.

“Bicton Military Academy played a huge part in my success, as if it wasn’t for the fantastic support and training I received from the tutors and my course-mates I may not have achieved my dream.”

Helen started studying at Bicton College 2014, studying Animal Care in her first year to gain a qualification before transferring in her send year onto the BTEC L2 Uniformed Public Services course at the College’s Military Academy.

This helped her gain essential knowledge, skill and confidence to apply for the Army.

Now in her third year and final year, she is currently studying NCFE Level 3 Entry to the Uniformed Services, which is an A-level equivalent course preparing students for their chosen career.

The former Dawlish Community College student has been focusing on her fitness and preparing for her final stages of her application.

Using her inter-disciplinary skills and knowledge learnt from both the Animal Care and Military departments, Helen attended her army first interview in early 2016 and went on to pass her Army selection in August.

However, with over 60 applications for the role, Helen had to attend a specialist interview this year, where she was told that she had been successful and will start training in October 2017.

Phil le Grice, Principal at Bicton College commented: “We are massively proud of Helen and all that she has achieved, and look forward to hearing about her going on to do great things! It is fantastic that we have such high quality Military and Public Services courses on offer at Bicton College, all taught by ex-services personnel with hands-on experience.”

Originally an Agricultural College, Bicton College has evolved into a College successfully offering a wide range of courses, preparing students for successful careers in numerous sectors.
