Danish-style dining in Cornwall for Shelterbox fundraiser

Published: February 10, 2017

A Danish-themed food lovers evening is being held in Cornwall to support the county’s most famous charity Shelterbox.

Travel and Tourism students from Cornwall College Camborne have come together with the charity that delivers aid to countries that have suffered from natural disasters to hold a culinary fundraising event at the AA College Rosette Trevenson restaurant.

The students have devised a unique dining experience based on the Danish “hygge” theme, giving the restaurant a cosy make-over and warm feeling.

Suzette Saddler, Travel & Tourism Team Lead, Cornwall College Camborne said, “The students were inspired to arrange and manage a fund raising event during their recent visit to ShelterBox and this has resulted in them working incredibly hard to plan an exciting event to raise money for this important charity”.

Guests will be treated to canapes and punch on arrival. They will be able to discover what’s inside one of the iconic green boxes seen on TV in many disaster areas and receive a presentation from a guest speaker from Shelterbox.

The three-course set dinner contains a wide variety of dishes specially chosen to represent countries in which ShelterBox has given aid to; theses are being prepared by catering students on the evening, supported by the colleges catering staff.

Student Elysia Pearce,  added, “Visiting ShelterBox in Truro has inspired me to raise as much money as we can, because seeing who they help and what a difference a couple of pounds can make to a family is amazing, after hearing a range of stories we don’t realise how lucky we are”.

Another student, Kelly Anne, said  that by holding this event, she will have the “opportunity to develop my management skills and get involved with the local community”.

“I’m looking forward to taking these skills onto employment in the future. I’m learning a range of new skills on how to plan and execute an event and this is an incredible opportunity to work with ShelterBox”.

On the night diners will have the chance to win one of many prizes and enjoy live entertainment from cruise ship singer Scarlette Von B.

Suzette concluded, “Putting on an event is part of the syllabus and a very important project for the students. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of prize donations the students have managed to acquire and the number of tickets already sold, which just emphasises the support and draw of this amazing charity.  It promises to be a great night for a great cause”.

The event is being held on the evening of Wednesday 8th of March 2017 at Trevenson restaurant Cornwall College Camborne. Tickets are £20 per person. Anyone wishing to book a table can do so by contacting ruth.sellors@cornwall.ac.uk or telephone 01209 616218.
