Carpentry and Foundation Learning students at Cornwall College Saltash have teamed up to build bird boxes from recycled timber for The National Trust. Antony House, an 18th century mansion and gardens, are going to be using the bird boxes to encourage more birds to set up home on the estate.

The carpentry students have used sustainable materials to make the bird boxes before handing them over to the foundation learning students to put them together at Antony House. The students have been learning valuable employability skills including teamwork, following instructions and meeting deadlines.

Carpentry student, Darryl Tyner, said: “I was the main student coordinator for building & assembling the bird boxes for the foundation team to reassemble on site. I enjoyed recycling timber to build the bird boxes. I organised the group of 5 students to drill, counter sink and assemble the boxes. Then we fixed the handles to allow the lids to be removed to inspect the boxes.”

Curriculum Lead for Construction at Saltash, Jamie Rowley, said: “It was great for our students to be part of this project at Antony House and we were delighted to support our foundation learners.”

Foundation Learning Lecturer at Cornwall College Saltash, Pip Day, said: “This has been a great opportunity for the students to use skills they would never have considered to do normally. It has helped them to understand work can be fun. All of them have learnt invaluable skills, including social skills that they wouldn’t have necessarily learnt in the classroom. It is lovely to see them get a real sense of achievement out of what they have made.”

Outdoor Education Programme Leader for the National Trust, Brian Langley, said: “The Cornwall College Saltash students and staff have only been coming to Antony since January, the impact of their work here has been really impressive. The foundation learning students have recently been assembling bird boxes which came flat packed from the carpentry students at college, most of which are completed and lined up ready to go. “
