Kate, it was quite a weekend for Caradon Gig Club who won both the under 16’s and the Ladies titles
Yes we are absolutely over the moon, it has been a long hard season and to finish it like we started has been amazing. We started our training around November time for the World Championships in May, we then continued our season with various regattas throughout the summer. In that time what we are really doing is training for the county championships, the regattas help give you a bit of an insight into where crews are and how they are developing.
Were you confident going into the weekend?
We did go in confident, we have been unbeaten all season. Fowey have been our closest rivals throughout the season, pushing us, which pushed us to train even harder. We were confident going into the county’s that we had the ability to do it again, but you never fully believe you will win. It’s the fear of disappointment that I don’t like, I don’t want to have that feeling.
You won by a fantastic lead didn’t you?
We did, I wasn’t able to look until we came along the last leg, but we couldn’t have asked for more. We were right in the middle of the pack, we went off the start at 100% and we flew, we were clear by the first minute of the other boats, and by the time we reached the first mark we were about three boat lengths clear. It’s nice to see the hard work we’ve put in over the last nine months pay off. The standard of rowing at the moment is huge and for us to be where we are is great.
What were the conditions like, the weather wasn’t very good on Sunday?
Yes the weather on the Sunday obviously wasn’t very good, but the sea conditions have actually been very good to us. We had a very wet semi-finals race in the morning, in torrential rain, I think we had more water in the boat than out the boat! But overall the actual sea conditions in the afternoon were perfect for us.
It’s great that your under 16s won their title as well.
Absolutely, they have also had a fantastic season, they really deserve that, they have worked so hard.
What’s the team plans going forward?
We have a bit of time off now then back into the training spirit beginning in November and back into the boats in January for hopefully another successful World Championships in May, so we’ll see what happens!
